Wednesday Wheels Roundup

Another week and another set of rare to see wheels. One of the things I love about doing this feature is that I come across wheels I had long forgotten or didn’t even know existed. Today there are some neat ones in here, such as the BBS RT700s pictured above that would really dress up a Mercedes or older Audi. There’s also a mega-rare J.A.Pearce wheels for early Porsche 911s, along with some great looking Hartge and Racing Dynamics wheels for BMWs. I also included a set of Fondmetal F1s – remember when they sponsored an Formula One team? Finally, there’s a set of one of my favorite Audi 4x108mm wheels – the optional sport wheels from the U.S. spec Cabriolet (they were also seen on some European sport models of the 90) that look spectacular and are very affordable.

Afternoon Accessories: Ronal R8 15×6 Wheels

Looking at that project Jetta GLi got me thinking about what wheels I’d love to see on there. In my quick search, I came across a set of wheels from a car that few seem to remember – the Renault Alliance GTA. Looking very similar to the A1 Jetta, the GTA was a two door sedan performance version of the regular Alliance, and wasn’t much of a performer but did look sharp thanks to some spectacular 15″ Ronal R8 alloys that were slightly modified in design specifically for the GTA. Differing from the normal Audi look, they had slight webbing in between the normal spokes. It’s not often you see either the car or the wheels anymore, but today there is a quite reasonably priced set on Ebay:

Year: 1987

Diameter: 15″
Width: 6″

Wednesday Wheels: Rota Alpina-style 15×6 Turbine Wheels

Okay, okay, they’re not actually Alpina wheels, but if you’re looking for a lot of style on a budget, Rota produces some great looking replica wheels. These are no exception; from even a slight distance most enthusiasts would be hard pressed to tell these apart from the real deal. Get close and the differences are noticeable, but then so is the price. If you’re building a budget replica or just want some class while taking the real wheels off the road for show only, this might just be a great option for you!

Rota has earned a bit of an unfair reputation as cheap wheels. From what I’ve seen, their quality isn’t far off many of the OEM wheels, so I’m not sure where the problem lies – but most of the issues I’ve seen are on more wide-open spoke designs in a much larger size. If you’re concerned, these probably aren’t the best track wheels, but for a daily driver? I’d jump on them for sure – at $700 for brand new in box Alpina-look wheels, that’s a quite reasonable deal!

Afternoon Accessories: Volkswagen Votex Factory Option Centras

Votex is the not particular well known outside of the Volkswagen scene semi-aftermarket supplier for Volkswagen and Audi; if you go back to their 1980’s catalogs, you’ll find spectacular accessories for your 80s ride. One of the most fitting details were the Centra wheels that were offered as a dealer option – like white wiper arms and painted-to-match trim pieces, these Centras were an essential accessory to make your Volkswagen pop:

Year: 1974-1998
Model: Centras

Width: 6.5″
Bolt Pattern: 4 x 100

These are old school at its finest – sold my Mk2 Jetta and new owner did not want my rims ( silly guy )

These fit VW Volkswagen Older BMW even Saturns i think.

These should fit any older Volkswagen and Audi 4×100 product, though for some uses you may need to machine the center bore. With newer tires and in great shape, these seem pretty appropriately priced considering their condition and rarity. While the look may not be for everyone, if you’re seeking that last 80s spectacular detail to round out your ride, these factory option wheels are one of the best ways:!

Afternoon Accessories: Original Treser Turbo wheels

If you’re into rare Volkswagens, then you’re probably into rare Volkswagen wheels. One of the rarest you can get are the TRX variety wheels made by Ronal for Treser. Known mostly for their outrageous Audi products, the Treser wheels are a neat period-correct detail if you really want to stand out from the crowd. You’re not seeing things in that photo above; they’re directional left and right:

Year: 1980-1999
Model: Treser Turbo
Diameter: TRX 365mm (14.4″)
Width: 8″
Bolt Pattern: 4 x 100
Offset: ET 40
Condition: Used
Tires: Not Included
Price: $ 299 Buy It Now

Very rare: set of TRESER Turbo Wheels for every VW with 4 X 100 Wheels i.e. Golf/Rabbit/Jetta Mk1, Golf/Jetta Mk2/3, Scirocco Mk1/2, Passat Mk1/2 etc. They were made by Ronal/Germany.

The size is 155mm X 365mm (similar to 6,5″ X 14,4″). You have to use metric tires Michelin TRX 190/55 HR 365 or 200/55 HR 365.

Two caps are missing, but they are of course useable without them.

Set consists of 2 right wheels and 2 left wheels and 2 centre caps.

Fast shipping with DHL/Deutsche Post following payment.

The bad news is that two of the likely irreplaceable center caps are missing; but you could run them without as the sale notes. Problem two is the tires; TRX tires are still available though pricey through retailers like Coker Tire; a quick check shows two tires are available that would fit, but they’re around $350 per tire. You really have to want these wheels. However, for those not really interested in the limited tire choices, TRX wheels like these make great garage art for the person who has everything, but wants one thing more – or in this case, 4 things more!
