1991 Porsche 911 Turbo

I’ll admit the market for a 964 3.3 Turbo perplexes me. At times they seem somewhat undervalued relative to the 930 that they replaced considering they feature nearly the same running gear, though with a redesigned body, and overall there are fewer of them given the much shorter model run. Much of this comparison only applies to the ’89 930 and the difference in value between an ’89 930 and a 964 3.3 Turbo comes down to the collector status of the ’89 as it’s the only year the 930 came equipped with a 5-speed manual. Yet, these 964 Turbos can be had for far less money than a comparable 993, which lately appear to have been catapulted into the stratosphere. I have long wondered how the relative markets of the 993 and 964 would play out. The 993 is the last of the air-cooled Turbos, yes, but the 964 is considered by many to be the last of the brawny, diabolical, Turbos since it remained purely in single-turbocharged rear-drive form while the 993 smoothed so many of the Turbo’s rough edges with its more sophisticated twin-turbocharging and all-wheel drive. Maybe it is only the 964 3.6 Turbo and Turbo S that will see enhanced values from these features, but overall it seems, at least for now, that the 964 3.3 Turbos might be flying a little under the radar.

1988 Porsche 930 Slantnose Coupe

It feels like it has been a while since I featured a Slantnose. For pure audacity it is one of my favorite designs from Porsche and epitomizes the ’80s style excesses that compliment the 930 so well. The Slantnose isn’t to everyone’s liking as it diverges from one of the 911’s primary design cues, the two forward-pointing round headlamps that immediately signal to any knowledgeable observer exactly what car is approaching. In the case of the Slantnose Porsche reached back to its design of the 935 racer for its inspiration and the design certainly lends an extra degree of aggressiveness to the already aggressive lines of the 930 itself. In Coupe form I absolutely love them; Cabriolets and Targas I am less enamored. But in this case, we have a coupe! A Guards Red 1988 Porsche 930 Slantnose, located in Atlanta, with 33,780 miles on it.

2007 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe – Paint to Sample

We frequently speak about the value to be found in the 996 range, and the 996TT specifically, but sometimes lost within the low prices of the 996TT and the seemingly ever-escalating prices of any air-cooled Turbo sits the 997. With a few of the 996’s design flaws remedied, which had turned off many long-time 911 fans, the 997 provides extremely capable performance in a more elegant and refined package. Sure, prices aren’t at 996 levels – the asking price here is nearly double that of a decent 996TT – but they aren’t astronomical either and surely represent excellent value given their performance capabilities. We are talking about 480 hp directed to all four wheels, sub-4 second runs to 60 mph, and a top speed that isn’t too far shy of 200 mph. They are fast and for the extra money over a 996TT you are getting a better looking 911 and 65 additional horses to propel you as far past legal speeds as you dare go. The example we see here also happens to be Orange: a paint-to-sample 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe, located in New York, with 43,500 miles on it.

1979 Porsche 930

I am going to return now to a long-time personal favorite of mine: a Black 911 Turbo. This particular example is the full menace, triple-black, configuration and while my own preferences lean toward black and tan, triple black always has enjoyed favor among a wide array of fans of the 911 Turbo. This is the version that brings the greatest level of aggression to match the car’s dynamics and it’s become the poster car configuration of many Turbos over the variety of 911 models. The example seen here, a triple-black 1979 Porsche 930 located in Nevada with a little under 60K miles, comes from the early years of the Turbo’s existence, though not one of the earliest 3.0 liter, non-intercooled, models. In many ways, this is the version that propelled the 911 forward through its combination of exhilarating performance wrapped in a package that retained a good deal of luxury and refinement. The 930 was Porsche’s statement to the world that they could compete with any automaker’s best while still producing a civilized machine when the driver sought a more leisurely drive. Not all supercars had to come with significant sacrifices!

1996 Porsche 911 Turbo

There are a variety of ways to make a car attract more notice, or in some cases we may even think of this making the car more enjoyable for the owner. Outside of modifications, which push stronger into the realm of subjectivity, we are dealing primarily with the color palette selected by the original purchaser and thankfully Porsche has long provided an ample array of options to suit every need in this regard, from the outlandish to the subtle. So how do you spice up the character of a car outfitted in a popular and attractive exterior color, but one that shall always remain subtle and, to some, uninspiring? You step into the interior. White over Red is a popular combination on many cars as the intensity of the Red benefits strongly from the extreme lightness of the White exterior. I mean, if you’re going for an interior color that stands out you really want it to stand out, right? This one stands out. This is really Red; the seller refers to it as Lip Stick Red and that’s more or less what we have with this paint-to-sample interior. Naturally such shades will not work for everyone, but it’s undoubtedly captivating and should help this 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo, located in British Columbia, stand apart from the rest of the collector market.
