Complain about not finding enough interesting 911 Coupes and suddenly you start finding a few interesting 911 Coupes. Funny how that works. This particular Coupe won’t be of interest to those hoping for originality or something to add to a collection, but it is nonetheless an interesting option that should provide excellent possibilities for driving on both road and track. It is primarily the execution and attention to detail that I find most striking about this example. The exterior also presents quite well, something that is not always the case with track cars. A 911 like this takes us back to the model’s roots and serves as a reminder that while Porsche has become very much a luxury brand and the 911 itself remains one of the best luxury sports coupes on the market, much of the marque’s history lies in racing and it is always nice to see well executed examples from caring owners. Here we have a Granite Green Metallic 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in British Columbia, with around 118K kilometers on it (~73,300 miles).

I mentioned in yesterday’s post the relative difficulty in finding interesting 911 Coupes and that difficulty becomes even more pronounced when looking at the 964. We don’t see a lot of 964s in general compared with other models and a good Coupe is even more rare. The one we see here, a Guards Red 1994 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Coupe with Tan leather interior, I think is well worth our consideration. 1994 marked the end of the 964’s run as we began to see the much-heralded debut of the 993. As we’ve mentioned before when discussing the 964, they led a tumultuous existence, never really beloved by 911 fans and to my mind in a constant state of flux; there’s such a wide diversity of models that it almost seems as if Porsche was restless. Perhaps that was in response to the 964’s muted reception, perhaps there were engineering factors, as we know with the 964 Turbo. Regardless of what went on while the 964 was new, the model has seen somewhat of a resurgence in recent years and excellent examples have begun to garner a good deal more appeal. We witnessed this last week when Seinfeld’s Polar Silver ’94 Turbo S Flatnose sold for over $1M. Those are exceedingly rare and special machines, but such numbers do speak to the increasing popularity of the model and even the standard cars are seeing greater values. This one should stretch just how far the market is willing to go.

5 CommentsAnother interesting Porsche 911 Targa. That’s certainly ok by me, but there’s been a continual nagging thought running through my head: why so many Targas? Or at least, why so many interesting Targas relative to Coupes? I don’t have a good answer for that. Targas typically show the lowest values, which could help explain why we see them on eBay more frequently than Coupes, but I do wonder if there is something more to it than that. Could owners have ordered Targas in a wider variety of colors and that’s why they are attracting my attention? That would seem strange, but maybe. Or perhaps Coupes were driven much more often thus making the lower mileage examples that tend to attract our notice more rare. I’m really not sure, but I do find it curious. There are certainly excellent air-cooled Carrera Coupes out there, especially for the 993 where this phenomenon does not seem to exist – though we should remember that the Targa was fundamentally changed for the 993 so we are dealing with something else entirely there. For whatever reason, I seem to come across a good Targa much more frequently. The one we see here is just such an example: a Venetian Blue 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa, located in California, with Linen leather interior and 64,650 miles on it.

2 CommentsIn some ways, this 911 could have found its way into the group of cars I featured earlier this week. It would have been the lowest price by a substantial margin, but given the difficulty in obtaining one – only 60 were made available and those only to PCA members – then we could understand why some might aspire to own just such a car. The 2016 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Club Coupe follows in the line of many special edition examples in that it serves to recognize a particular Porsche milestone. In this case that milestone being the 60th year of the Porsche Club of America. Also like many Porsche special editions the primary manner in which these are differentiated from other models is mostly aesthetic, though as noted above this model was additionally distinguished through its restricted availability. Of course, that issue does not affect the secondary market. The base of the Club Coupe begins at the top of the 911 model range with the Carrera GTS, featuring the widened rear of the Carrera 4, but retaining its rear-drive layout. Added to that is a Powerkit, initially only available on the Club Coupe, to boost power to 430 hp. But the most striking feature is the paint, which has been dubbed Club Blau, and it really sets the Club Coupe apart from other 911s. Additional features are some interior upgrades, a ducktail rear spoiler, and a set of 20 inch Sport Classic wheels.

Comments closedThe Porsche 911 has been around for so long that there are numerous special editions attached to its history. One which we’ll highlight today is a 911 that the US market never saw, the 964 based 30 Jahre. These turbo look 911s were built in honor of the car’s 30th anniversary. While 911 of these “Jubi” editions were supposed to be built, only 896 have been proven to have been produced. In addition to the turbo look body, a few features help one distinguish a Jubi, including the titanium inlay on the shift knob, woven 911 lettering on the backs of the rear backrests and a titanium plaque on the rear shelf with the car’s production number. Only a few colors were offered, with Viola Metallic being the most popular. Other hues included Amethyst Metallic, Arctic Silver Metallic and a handful of Black Metallic and Guards Red cars. This Viola Metallic example for sale in the United Kingdom has just crossed the 20,000 mile mark and comes with a hefty price tag.
