1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

Another interesting Porsche 911 Targa. That’s certainly ok by me, but there’s been a continual nagging thought running through my head: why so many Targas? Or at least, why so many interesting Targas relative to Coupes? I don’t have a good answer for that. Targas typically show the lowest values, which could help explain why we see them on eBay more frequently than Coupes, but I do wonder if there is something more to it than that. Could owners have ordered Targas in a wider variety of colors and that’s why they are attracting my attention? That would seem strange, but maybe. Or perhaps Coupes were driven much more often thus making the lower mileage examples that tend to attract our notice more rare. I’m really not sure, but I do find it curious. There are certainly excellent air-cooled Carrera Coupes out there, especially for the 993 where this phenomenon does not seem to exist – though we should remember that the Targa was fundamentally changed for the 993 so we are dealing with something else entirely there. For whatever reason, I seem to come across a good Targa much more frequently. The one we see here is just such an example: a Venetian Blue 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa, located in California, with Linen leather interior and 64,650 miles on it.

This 1988 Porsche 911 Targa with only a little over 64k documented original miles from is offered for sale. It is beautifully finished in all original Venetian Blue Metallic paint exterior over a rare original Linen leather interior with matching carpet. This Targa is as mechanically sound as it is beautiful. Only a 2-owner Porsche (Seller is 2nd owner) with all original features and comes with: copy of original window sticker, original manuals, all keys, toolkit, compressor, car cover, Blaupunkt Reno, and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

Delivered new to its first owner by George Follmer Porsche of Southern California, who for the next 25 years drove the car sparingly and lovingly, always keeping it garaged and out of the elements. Seller purchased it in 2013 from the original owner and has also driven it sparingly and lovingly and has kept it covered and garaged.

The car’s finish is exemplary, has a deep and lustrous paint color, with only a few minor imperfections, none of which detract from the car’s beauty and appeal. The body is entirely straight and free of dents. No accidents. All of the glass and rubber is in excellent condition, the Targa top shows virtually no wear, and neither do any of the Fuchs wheels. The car’s undercarriage is completely rust-free, original and untouched, showing only road dust consistent with its well-cared-for age and use.

This beautiful car’s interior is equally as clean, with the original Linen leather seats showing only nominal wear. The same can said of the Linen interior panels and the door pockets that retain their correct shape – a common problem on more used examples of this model. The dash is free of cracks or warping.

The sound system is a custom Nakamichi chosen by the original owner when he bought it new. Original owner also chose the upgraded option stereo with CD and the Special Wishes center console to go with it. Seller has an original Blaupunkt Reno radio, which comes with the sale. Car also equipped with an alarm.

This 911 Targa is also mechanically excellent. The 3.2L engine starts strong, and moves smoothly through each of the G50 transmission’s gears. If you’re in the market for a late ‘80s G50 transmission 911, there are very few examples better than this exceptional 911. Only 64,650k documentable miles.

This is arguably one of the best examples of one of Porsche’s best creations. Rare and highly desirable color combination of the Venetian Blue Metallic with Linen interior. Whether you’re in the market as a seasoned Porsche collector or just as a weekend enthusiast, this exceptional G50 transmission example is absolutely the car to have.

On to this particular Targa, we find a very nice open and oceanic contrast between the Venetian Blue exterior and the Linen interior. There also appear to be a few interesting options, one of which – the center console that is said to be from the Special Wishes program – I cannot recall coming across on any previous examples. We don’t get many pictures of that interior so it is difficult to gauge its condition. The same can be said of the exterior due to the low lighting of the pictures. Given the probable reserve for a G50-equipped Carrera I would imagine those issues will hold back this auction enough that it won’t hit the reserve. This does look like a very promising example though, and coming in a rare color with some rare options I would imagine the overall interest will be high if everything checks out in good condition.

Might be a good one but lousy photos. What’s with all the cropping?

I have seen that console in some 930’s but never in a NA car. I will follow this auction closely as my own cassis red 88 targa only has a couple thousand more miles on it. Nice looking car. It was 75 and sunny here (Philly) last week and I took the old girl out without the top on and remembered how much fun it is with the roof off.
