1995 Porsche 911 Rauh-Welt Begriff #1

The sudden impact and influence of Nakai-san’s hand-crafted Porsche creations is both impressive and perhaps unprecedented. In part, that’s thanks to the proliferation of new media sources; go back to the 1980s, and no matter how cool his cars were it would have been much more difficult for him to become a name that most enthusiasts seem to know these days. We also live in a world which both is losing hand-crafted expertise but also celebrates it as the incredible skill it is. The cars he creates are racing inspired – a whole culture that exists in Japan but is undoubtedly taken to a much higher level by RWB. Stretched and slammed, the RWB cars are each unique but share heritage that resembles the racing 911 Turbo and GT2 models. They’re beyond replicas of race cars, though, defining their own unique identity. Not everyone likes the look, but nearly all can appreciate the attention to detail and incredible craftsmanship that goes into these cars:

1986 Porsche 911 Cabriolet

It’s rather amazing that the Porsche 911 went almost a full 20 years without a full on convertible option, relying on the Targa variant to address the wants and desires of those seeking al fresco motoring. In 1983, the 911SC Cabriolet debuted, quickly replaced in 1984 with the introduction of the Carrera 3.2 range. While most hardcore enthusiasts prefer the rigidity of the coupe variant, there is something about the Cabriolet that conjures up images of carefree jaunts by the seaside, enjoying the raspy tune from the flat-6 mill swung aft of the rear axle line. This 1986 911 Cabriolet is painted in an uncommon shade of Perlmuttweiss Mica over black leather with white piping.

1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S

There’s something about a widebody 911 that gets my heart racing. The 993 Carrera S and 4S captured this look perfectly, with it’s smoother styling that would usher in the final chapter of the air-cooled 911. The Carrera S and 4S was an attempt, as in previous generations, to capture a bit of the aggression of the 911 Turbo without the cost or complexity. Other than the rear wing and twin-turbocharged engine, the S models were quite similar to the Turbo, sharing the wider rear haunches that would ultimately increase aerodynamic drag. This Carrera 2S for sale in Ohio has been tuned up a bit, looking quite mean in black sitting on replica Fuchs alloys.

Motorsports Monday: 1972 Porsche 911T and 1980 Porsche 911SC

A rather sad thing is happening within the Porsche world; the 911 is increasing in value so rapidly that its original dual purpose nature is being threatened. The 911 was, for some time, one of the few cars that really was effectively track-ready right out of the box. While it’s seldom been the all-out fastest circuit car available the 911 has been the dependable choice; lightweight with enough power to thrill you and enough idiosyncrasies to challenge you as a driver. Today I’ve rounded up two track-ready examples that still can be street driven; both 3.0s but with different yet classic interpretations of the 911 design, which is the winner?

1996 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S

While wide-body 911s have always been popular the design seems to have really hit its stride with the 993 and every iteration that has followed has looked tremendous with those wider rear fenders. Don’t get me wrong, the earlier turbos and other special 911s looked quite good as well, but once the 911 took on the curvier shape of the 993 that wider rear began to look just right. I’d even hazard to say that the narrow-body cars now look slightly out of place; they’re too slim. The Carrera 4S showcases those extra curves extremely well while providing the added benefit of all-wheel drive to help keep things moving in the intended direction. As with most 993s the market has remained strong for these cars, especially in colors we come across less often like this Aventurine Green Metallic 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, located in Connecticut, with 58,009 miles on it.
