1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe – REVISIT

The Turquoise Green Metallic 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe with contrasting Marble Grey and Midnight Blue interior, which we featured last May, is back up for sale. Since it has now moved on to a different seller I thought perhaps we’d check back in on this very pretty 993. The original seller stated that this color combination was special ordered through Porsche Exclusive, but there’s no sign of that in the present ad. Whether it was special ordered or not, it remains a wonderful color and a unique find among the last of the air-cooled 911s.

1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S

I had my eye on a few of the larger auctions during the past few weeks and noticed an interesting trend that seemed especially prevalent among higher-end Porsches: they were almost all selling for a good bit below the auction house’s estimates. Granted those estimates may have been off, but in a few cases the selling prices were definitely lower than I would have expected. Early 930s were the most common in that regard so we’ll definitely have to keep an eye on where those are as we go forward. At the Gooding and Co. auction this trend wasn’t limited to Porsches as it seemed nearly everything was selling below their estimates, which itself could suggest a general financial tightening. The one possible exception was the 993. Not every 993 sold reached the high estimates of the auction houses – though a few certainly did – but many of them were showing much better than their counterparts from throughout the air-cooled 911 line. All is this is to say that it appears the 993 is still going strong. The one we see here is exactly the sort that could follow that trend of maintaining strong values – even though, if we’re honest, the asking price here is too high. Here we have a Black 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S, located in California, with the factory aerokit and just 19,714 miles on it.

Motorsports Monday: 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera Cup 3.8 RSR

Over the weekend I took advantage of some frankly great streaming video from the IMSA Racing application to view some of the Rolex 24 at Daytona. And the action was thrilling, with several classes being decided not in the last hour, but in the last minutes. Of particular interest to me was the GTLM category, where Porsche had been going round after round with team Corvette over the past few years. And while they weren’t challenging for the overall victory, it gave me pause to consider Porsche’s contribution to racing. You see, Porsche has recorded 22 overall victories at Daytona, but what’s perhaps more impressive is the claimed 77 class victories they’ve claimed. It wasn’t to be this year, but one of the 991 RSRs did make it to the podium. Fitting, then, that we should look at one of the more impressive and expensive variants of the 911 RSR; the 993 Cup 3.8. Only 30 of these racing variants were produced; less even than the road-going 3.8 Carrera RS with which it shared its name. Lightened, widened and with something like 400 horsepower coming from the race-prepared motor, these are still seriously potent track weapons today some 20 years later:

1998 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

As a general rule final model year cars always hold a particular cachet and command a premium over their predecessors. That isn’t mind-blowing news or anything, but what I suppose we can wonder is just how much of a premium makes sense. That is more or less where I am at with this car, a Guards Red over Cashmere Beige 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet located in New York with 28,822 miles on it. In a way I’m at a similar crossroads to my feelings on the two ultra-low-mileage and rare color 911s I’ve posted over the past weeks. They were otherwise standard Carreras and as such I wonder how high they may ever go – or at least their ceiling over the next decade. This one seems to be banking on the final model year designation, which of course in this case is compounded by it being the last air-cooled model as well, to reach its high asking price. There is no doubt that for those seeking the full open-top experience in an air-cooled 911 that an example like this one serves as a good place to start. It’s the most modern and refined air-cooled 911 available and the 993’s lines seem to work a little better with the Cabriolet shape than on some other 911s.

1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

Here we have a 993 poised along the same trajectory as this Venetian Blue 3.2 Carrera, which we featured last month. Both come in very pretty, and rare, exterior colors and sit with very low mileage. Each also comes with a very high price tag. I have a particular affinity for the example here, a Turquoise Metallic 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe located in Arizona, because it’s a very similar color to my first car, of which I have many fond memories (and no it was not a 993). I’ve come across a lot of 993s with few miles and high price tags, and even seen some bid to very high prices, but this is one of the few I’ve seen that is a Carrera 2. Will even these base models begin to stretch into six-figure territory?
