I spend a decent percentage of my 911 perusing looking specifically at the years of 964 production. Mostly that’s to be on the lookout for interesting examples of the 964 itself, but also for interesting examples of the ’89 3.2 Carrera. The latter are plentiful, while the former certainly are not. To be clear, I see plenty of 964s out there, but they tend to all be more or less the same: either black, red, or white in reasonable, not great, condition and consisting mostly of Targas and Cabriolets. Given the wide variety of interesting colors Porsche had available during the 964’s life it almost seems strange that we don’t see more of them, but rare colors are just that. When we add to that the difficultly Porsche had in selling these in the first place, then we probably shouldn’t be surprised that those that did sell were of a more typical variety. Well, I’ve found a couple that stood out to me more so than the rest. The one we see here isn’t of the rare vibrant sort, but I really like a 964 in Grey (for whatever reason the color suits the model’s lines well) so it caught my attention. We’re short on information, but the condition looks pretty good and if the price can be brought down some I think Cabriolet fans could be quite pleased. Here we have a Stone Grey (Steingrau) Metallic 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet, located in San Francisco, with a Taupe leather interior and 86,176 miles on it.

I feature (and we come across) a fairly good number of 911s in lighter and brighter shades of blue. This is especially true of the 3.2 Carrera where it seems that light blue was a much more popular and common choice than any of the darker varieties available. Here we will look at a Coupe in one of those darker shades: a paint-to-sample Persian Blue 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Washington, with matching Blue interior and 68,095 miles on it. I tend to gravitate toward the brighter blues, but these dark examples do possess a certain allure for those who may be looking for a departure from the much more standard Black 911 that we see regularly. This particular 911 appears in pretty nice shape given its age and as the final year before the Carrera came equipped with the G50 5-speed transmission we can hope the price will end somewhat more on the reasonable side of the spectrum.

Comments closedI’m going to turn my attention to another modified 911, though this time one that has moved in an entirely different direction than the RSR backdate featured earlier this week. This 911 also should come with a much more reasonable price tag. At least, that is the hope and should be the case barring some extremely aggressive bidding on this auction. There’s kind of a lot to review here so let’s get to it: here we have a 911 that began its life as a 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe fitted with the M491 Turbo-look package. It is very well traveled having covered a reported 236,211 miles over its life. At some point (we can probably assume recently, but the seller does not say when) the Turbo-look moniker became more than just appearance as the engine and transmission from a 930 were fitted. Again, we don’t have precise details on the engine; there is some suggestion that it is actually the engine from a 3.3 liter 964 Turbo, but again we lack some clarity. Given the mileage I assume this 911 has also been painted and the interior refreshed (or perhaps redone altogether). I’m not sure about the name of this exterior color, but it looks quite good. The interior I’d guess is Cork and it too looks in really nice shape. There are a host of other small aesthetic changes to both the exterior and interior, but other than the wheels, which I don’t care much for, most of these additions are minor and could be changed without issue should someone so desire. Those are the details, and the questions all come down to the engine, transmission, and body.

2 CommentsThe striking Amaranth Violet 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S, which we featured almost exactly one year ago, has come back up for sale from a new seller. As one of the much more rare shades we ever see there is sure to be a good deal of interest here, but whether it can find a new buyer we shall have to wait and see. It’s wearing different wheels now than in its previous auction and still sports a few modifications so it isn’t as original as some collectors might hope, but the color is one you’ll almost never come across. Purple isn’t the most popular color on a car, but it really does look mighty good here.

3 CommentsAt first, I was a little hesitant to feature this 911. Like many other similar builds the price here is very high and probably won’t garner it too much interest, but there are a lot of little details of the build that I like and overall the finished product looks fantastic. I mean, they painted it Tangerine so how could I resist? As backdated 911s go this one didn’t have to travel far back in time, but the differences in appearance are nonetheless tremendous. Originally a 1974 911 the builders needed only return to one year earlier for the inspiration for their design. Of course, 1973 is the common year chosen as the source material for most backdates since it is either the look of the Carrera RS or the RSR that typically serves as the desired outcome. While the body of this 911 is from 1974 the engine is not. In place of the constricted 2.7 liter units standard in ’74 is a 3.2 liter flat-six mated to the standard 915 5-speed transmission. That 3.2 liter should provide much better reliability and power and is a common choice we see for many upgrades of this type. Much of the rest that is of interest lies in the cosmetic details ranging from the widened rear fenders, which are filled completely by 11 inch wheels, to the minimalist interior fitted with tartan covered bucket seats. It appears to be a nicely put together package and should provide a healthy level of performance, if not quite RSR levels of ferocity.
