1987 Porsche 911 Clubsport

It’s a rare day when I’ll talk about a Porsche 911 on this forum, as my fellow contributor Rob has spent a lifetime devoted to this air-cooled sportscar. When we hang out together, one question has arisen from time to time: “if you had to have one 911, which one would it be?” That’s a tough one, considering we have a model portfolio of 50 years to choose from. But one 911 stands out as the holy grail for me: the 3.2 Clubsport. To me, this is what the 911 is all about. Light weight, no frills and a pure driving experience. 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Targa

I’ve looked at a few 911SC Targas lately that I’ve really liked and all appeared to be fairly reasonable values, which admittedly was a large part of the appeal. I’ll now fast forward in time a little bit to the 964 to take a look at a 1991 Porsche Carrera 2 Targa. This one isn’t quite the excellent value the others appeared to be, but it comes in one of our perennial favorite colors: Cobalt Blue. I’ve seen a good number of 964 Targas come up for sale over the past few months and as is typical they come in wide ranging conditions. This one isn’t perfect either, but for the most part it looks in very good shape, and as a one-owner 911 we can hope there’s a good bit of history to come with it.

Double-Take: Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Cabriolet

I have been enjoying my jaunt through the world of classic 911s looking at examples of the 911SC and 3.2 Carrera. We’ve seen a few nice, and reasonably priced, Targas, a couple very nice Coupes, and a very pretty Carrera Cabriolet. That last model will take our focus in this post as we look at examples from both the beginning and end of the 3.2 Carrera’s model run. 1983, the last year of 911SC production, was the first year Porsche produced a 911 Cabriolet and since there was only one year for those models, it is to the 3.2 Carrera that we typically must turn when looking for the combination of a fully-open cockpit with that classic 911 design. I wouldn’t classify the two we see here as especially rare colors since each is more a subtle variant of a common color, but the color combinations are not ones that we come across very frequently. Those combinations definitely bring with them an extra level of scarcity with these. We will begin with the example from the first year of 3.2 Carrera production, a Slate Blue Metallic 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet located in California with Grey Beige leather interior and 48,133 miles on it.

1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6

I believe I have mentioned before a White 964 Carrera 4 that roams around my neighborhood. I see it from time to time on the occasional weekend excursion or, even more commonly, parked on the street. It never fails to attract my gaze and it’s recognizable even at night with those headlights directed right at you as it approaches. The most mysterious aspect for me is that I am so taken by a white car. I’m not a huge fan of white cars and most of them I find very boring. That said, I have always found that it is a color that works on particular models very well. The 964 appears to be one of those models. I can’t say why that is, but for me at least it is the case. This brings us to the car we see here, a Grand Prix White 1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6, located in Houston, with a Classic Grey leather interior and 58,203 miles on it. While Grand Prix White itself doesn’t strike me as a particularly rare color it has been pretty rare to come across a Turbo 3.6 in Grand Prix White. Like the Carrera 4 with which I have such a passing familiarity, the color works quite well here and coming in the guise of the fantastic Turbo 3.6 simply makes it that much better.

1966 Porsche 911 Prototype

Here’s one for the historians and collectors: a 1966 Porsche 911 Prototype, fitted with a variety of racing components and features from the 911R, that served duty from 1966-1968 before being retired as Porsche transitioned to a longer wheelbase. It is believed to be the first 911 to feature rear fender flares as it was the 911 that served as the testing bed specifically for those flares, which we would then see on the 911R. The ad gives us a few other details of the car’s components, which include a 2.0 liter flat-six from 1968. The documentation provided is scant and nothing I’ve been able to find tells us what became of this 911 during the years from 1968 after it was retired as a prototype up to the 2000s when it was discovered and revived. Given its appearance at the exclusive Amelia Island Concours – a point we can verify – there are at least a few folks that feel pretty certain of its identity. I’m not sure who discovered it, but that must have been one heck of a barn find.
