Motorsport Monday: 1997 Porsche 993 RSR 3.8 – REVISIT

A little over a month ago, I wrote up one of the last air-cooled Porsche race cars to roll out of the factory – the mighty 993 RSR 3.8. Despite being a factory race car with lots of history, it didn’t manage to sell on Race-Cars.com and now has popped up on Ebay. I mentioned in the write up that you could replicate this car for much less than the asking price, though the value was in the factory build and the history. That value has gotten slightly worse since not selling, because the owner has raised the opening bid $30,000 to $295,000. It’s a strange tactic to take when your car doesn’t sell, but despite that the car is still really neat to peek at!

1978 Porsche 930

While it would likely be too much to say that the Porsche 930 created the 911’s image as a high performance car that required an equally high degree of skill, there’s little doubt that the 930 helped cement that legacy and propel the model forward. These cars were intended to raise the bar for Porsche performance into supercar territory and for the most part it was a success. Beginning with the 1978 model year, Porsche increased displacement from 3.0 liters to 3.3 liters and added an intercooler in order to bring power up to 300 hp. With the addition of the larger whale tail on the Turbo the car’s looks were aggressive enough to suit its performance. The car featured here is an excellent looking 1978 Porsche 930 that comes in the rare combination of a Bamboo Beige exterior over a Cork leather interior. While it has just under 55,000 miles it’s seen a fully rebuilt engine along with the refreshing of most other components.

1949 Porsche “Frankfurt Flyer” Custom

In the world of home-brewed specials, there are plenty that scream “Run for the hills!” and even more that just look so flat they’re forgettable. Many of these are Volkswagen-derived specials, and while most of them try to copy more expensive cars there are precious few that achieve it. However, a few months back one started to circulate the halls of the Interweb; the Glockler-inspired handbuilt “Frankfurt Flyer”. Based on modest Volkswagen internals, the custom hand-hammered aluminum body managed to evoke images of unaffordable Porsches and even the Auto-Union high-speed record racers that the Porsche father and son team worked on. It was simply amazing to see this car take shape and how like some of the factory cars it appears. The fabricator has decided to continue to produce these gems, and has an unbuilt chassis ready to assemble of Ebay:

1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet Silver Anniversary Edition

At the end of a car’s lifecycle or when it passes a milestone of production, typically a manufacturer will offer a special edition model to commemorate the event. In the case of the Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera, these two events coincided in 1989, as the sun was setting on the 3.2 for the 964 model and 1989 marked 25 years of the 911. Offered in two colors, Silver Metallic or Satin Black, this was a limited run model that included Silk Gray supple leather seats, a center console covered in leather that had an outside temperature gauge and CD holders, front and rear spoilers, a shorter throw shifter and color keyed wheels. This Cabriolet version for sale in California has just over $50,000 miles and offers a rare opportunity at what some consider the ultimate mashup between the classic and modern 911.
