Double Take: Original and Extra Spicy 1977 BMW 630CSis

Earlier in the week I wrote up a pristine, lower mile E12 528i that was a very pretty color combination and rare to see. The early generation cars of the 1980s – the E12, early E24 and E21 – are still in collector no man’s land; they’re in general not sought after enough to justify expensive restorations, and they’re not valuable enough for people to keep in pristine condition. They’re also not the best performers that BMW has produced; but in spite of that they’re all pretty cars and when well presented it’s a reminder of how clean and desirable some of these early BMW designs were. Few are as pretty as the original Paul Bracq designed E24 with it’s low, lean and long stance. Bespoilered later in life the design become increasingly cluttered and more aggressive, and while that has a certain appeal the early cars really do express the original design better. Today there are two examples, surprisingly, of the early run 630CSi – in your choice of original or modified “extra-spicy”. Which would you prefer? Let’s start with the modified version:

1998 BMW 740i with 25k miles

There’s a lot of cars that I sit here and think if only they were still manufactured, they would still find buyers. One car that sticks out in my mind is the E38 BMW 7 series. While the 7 series that preceded it, the E32, pushed this model into the executive sedan mainstream, the E38 cemented BMW’s place in that segment. But then came the E65 7 series in 2002 which polarized BMW traditionalists with it’s avant garde styling and complex electronic wizardry. Time has passed and the criticism of that 7 series has softened, but one thing it won’t do is age as gracefully as the E38. Want to play CEO? This 740i for sale in Nebraska has but 25k miles and will let you live out that fantasy.

2002 BMW M Coupe S54

It’s been a little while since we wrote up our last M Coupe, a beautiful S52 powered Estoril Blue example. And while those early M Coupes are a great deal these days for a fun performance car with plenty of personality, most enthusiasts really want to get their hands on the later cars that came with the S54 motor. There weren’t many other changes to the 2001 and 2002 M Coupes besides this motor swap, but that was enough to make the already good E36/8 all the more entertaining. These later build cars carry a premium due to their increased performance and exclusivity and seem to come up for sale less than the early cars do. Today, there is a brilliant looking Sapphire Black over black leather example on Ebay:

1998 BMW M3 Sedan

$_57

Every time I go out on the web and browse around for a BMW E36 M3 sedan, the selection is usually a bit underwhelming. A lot of these four-door M cars were automatic and while it certainly doesn’t make it a terrible car, it does nothing to sate the appetite of the enthusiast. There’s also a lot of higher mileage examples out there which can potentially scare off the novice M car buyer. This M3 sedan, however, is a 5-speed manual and even with 125k under its belt, still looks the business.

1979 BMW 528i

While the BMW faithful and converts have flocked to the E28 and E30 as the next collectable and drivable classics, nearly ignored in BMW history are the E21 and E12 predecessors; cars that both revolutionized the small luxury sport sedan market and set the stage for their more sought after replacements. If you’re not in as much of a hurry and don’t mind the more 70s, less 80s approach of the earlier cars, finding a clean example is a much cheaper proposition than the market stars that everyone is looking for. Truth be told, finding those clean examples – especially the E12 variety – can be difficult, but today there is a mint condition, lower mile 1979 528i example on Ebay:
