1999 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe – REVISIT

The 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe we featured back in April remains for sale. With its Mirage Metallic over Boxster Red color combination this is one of the prettiest 996s we’ve come across, but the consensus was that the price was too high. Well, it’s probably still too high, but it has been lowered by nearly $5K and now sits at $32K. If that price were lowered another $5K I suspect we’d see this 911 snapped up pretty quickly, but at least we are moving in the right direction. We’ll see whether it has any takers.

1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe

My quest for interesting 964s continues apace and while many of them exist they are rarely easy to find. Enter the example we see here, a rare Diamond Blue Metallic 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe, located in Florida, with Marine Blue leather interior and a robust 155,102 miles on it. Readers might recall that I featured a Diamond Blue Metallic 3.2 Carrera Coupe last week with a similarly contrasting interior. That 911 offers a nice juxtaposition for grasping the changes Porsche instituted when it debuted the 964, the first full redesign the 911 had seen in over a decade. The new shape was a little rounder, a little more stocky looking. It also came with a host of technological changes, most significantly the debut of the Carrera 4 – Porsche’s first all-wheel drive 911. While the system has seen significant improvements since its debut it still stands as one of the more significant changes brought to the quirky engineering of Porsche’s most iconic road car.

1992 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe

The second of my 964s takes thing in a much more interesting, though also in a more likely divisive direction. Unlike yesterday’s Cabriolet, which likely would make for an excellent open-top driver 911, the Coupe we see here aims straight for collectors. That is in part due to its low mileage, but largely due to its eye-catching color combination. With an Amethyst Metallic exterior over a Cobalt Blue interior I can honestly say I’ve seen nothing else like it. There’s likely a reason we haven’t come across such a combination previously. The juxtaposition probably will be hard for some to get their head around. One of our commenters remarked that the Amaranth Violet 993 we featured last week would have been very much Prince’s style. I think this Carrera 4 takes us even further in that direction.

1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet

I spend a decent percentage of my 911 perusing looking specifically at the years of 964 production. Mostly that’s to be on the lookout for interesting examples of the 964 itself, but also for interesting examples of the ’89 3.2 Carrera. The latter are plentiful, while the former certainly are not. To be clear, I see plenty of 964s out there, but they tend to all be more or less the same: either black, red, or white in reasonable, not great, condition and consisting mostly of Targas and Cabriolets. Given the wide variety of interesting colors Porsche had available during the 964’s life it almost seems strange that we don’t see more of them, but rare colors are just that. When we add to that the difficultly Porsche had in selling these in the first place, then we probably shouldn’t be surprised that those that did sell were of a more typical variety. Well, I’ve found a couple that stood out to me more so than the rest. The one we see here isn’t of the rare vibrant sort, but I really like a 964 in Grey (for whatever reason the color suits the model’s lines well) so it caught my attention. We’re short on information, but the condition looks pretty good and if the price can be brought down some I think Cabriolet fans could be quite pleased. Here we have a Stone Grey (Steingrau) Metallic 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet, located in San Francisco, with a Taupe leather interior and 86,176 miles on it.

1999 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe

Here’s something kind of rare. And I mean that not necessarily as referring to this car in its own right, but rather as a rare appearance on our pages. For a variety of reasons we don’t feature the 996 very often outside of the 996TT and the GT2. That’s in part due to some of the reliability issues that have plagued 996 engines and in part (truthfully, in large part) to the incredible performance value that those two models, especially the 996TT, represent. But the 996, even in standard form, is itself a bit of a performance value when compared to its air-cooled predecessors so unique examples should still attract our notice. Any quick internet reading will tell all that most need to know about potential reliability issues of the 996, especially of the earlier examples like this one, but it’s not as if every 996 is a time bomb waiting to go off. So they should be approached with caution, but for the right price not outright ignored. Here we have one in a fairly interesting and rare color combination: a Mirage Metallic 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe, located in New York, with a Boxster Red leather interior and 37,000 miles on it.
