1985 Mercedes-Benz 300TD

It seems there’s a never ending supply of good Mercedes-Benz W123s out there. I’ve met a good number of people who have owned or experienced these cars over time and all of them have walked away impressed. With modern manufacturing and bean counters, it’s doubtful we’ll ever see a car engineered to a point like this in the near future. The good thing is, however, that these cars’ durability have kept many on the road, clocking hundreds of thousands of miles each in the process. This 300TD for sale in Georgia has made a few long distance trips, having just broken 160,000 miles. Considering their reputation, the break in period for this final year W123 estate has just ended.

1981 Volkswagen Rabbit Diesel LS

$_57 (4)

A Rabbit Diesel is about the lowest rung of autos we write up here, and that’s exactly why I like to draw attention to them. As everyone rushes out to buy their kids and significant others various hybrid commuters and electric Fiat toys, I wish they’d broaden what they consider efficient cars. Having seen roadtrips well above 50 mpg in a Mk4 Jetta diesel, a Mk1 seems like a great, inexpensive way to get around town efficiently. They remind me of simpler times, and I wish more people felt the same way. This little survivor spent much of its life being towed behind an RV and has driven under its own power for just 100k miles. The 200k miles on some of the running gear is negligible in the face of the utility the little diesel could provide for hundreds of thousands of miles to come. All this for a few grand? Now THAT’S efficient.

1974 Mercedes-Benz Unimog 416

This is a refreshingly not-drab green Unimog, a long-wheelbase 416 model looking awesome in white on black with a convertible top. The paint makes it look significantly more modern than a lot of the Mogs we see, even though they were exactly the same for 25 years and look similar still. The aesthetics make me want it, but the auction starting significantly higher than similar models we’ve seen makes me want to stay away.

1984 Mercedes-Benz 300D

About eight years ago, I had the chance to visit the Mercedes-Benz Museum outside of Stuttgart, Germany. Of all the exhibits, the one that intrigued me the most was a car transporter with models from the early 1980s on it, including a W123 230E sedan in the same metallic blue as we see here on this well-preserved 1984 300D. We’ve poured over the qualities that make these mid-sized Mercedes sedans, coupes and estates great throughout the years, but rarely do they come as showroom fresh as this one for sale in California.

1994 Mercedes-Benz E300 Diesel Estate

Mercedes-Benz has been one of the mainstays in diesel passenger car offerings in the United States. However, into the 1990s, the selection became a bit thin. If you wanted a diesel engine with estate carrying capacity towards the end of the W124 E class production, you were out of luck. In fact, Mercedes has not offered a diesel estate in the US since 1987, as 1988 saw the introduction of the 300TE to replace the 300TD. One intrepid Mercedes mechanic, though, has gone the extra mile to create what never was on this side of the Atlantic, with this 1994 E300 Diesel Estate.
