1997 Mercedes-Benz G300 CDI Convertible

$_57

I’ve alluded to my annoyance at the ubiquity of the AMG Geländewagens around Silicon Valley, as growing up there was a mystique to insane breathed-on monster SUVs. The German marques have seemed to erase all mystique in their performance brands by expanding them to every model and selling as many as possible. Today’s G-Wagen would turn some heads and probably elicit some envy from G55 owners, intrigued by this short wheelbase convertible that will seem to the rich but ignorant to be a very expensive and unique car when it was in fact a more base version in other parts of the world. Living in Canada but with a US title, this would be an extremely capable off-roader with diesel efficiency and Jeep-like convertibility. The importation and rarity doesn’t make it cheap though, with an asking price that could easily get you a very nice, newer G55.

1997 Mercedes-Benz E300 Diesel

I feel as if time hasn’t been all that kind to the W210 Mercedes-Benz E class. We’re almost 20 years out since this car appeared on the scene and with it, a new styling language to take Mercedes-Benz into the 21st century. Under that fresh face was a good old standby in the form of the diesel engine. While most manufacturers had abandoned oil burners in the 1990s, Mercedes stayed on a few years longer in the US and offered the new W210 E class with the 3.0 liter inline-6 diesel that produced 174 horsepower and 244 lb ft of torque. There weren’t a whole lot of takers for this car in comparison to the petrol powered E320, but those who gave it a shot would be won over by the renowned Mercedes diesel durability. This E300 for sale in California has a remarkably low 70,000 miles on the clock, unusual for a diesel Mercedes.

1977 Mercedes-Benz 240D

In the realm of German motorcars, it seems within each marque, a favorite has emerged as the standard bearer of each manufacturers’ virtues. The air-cooled Porsche 911s appeal to those hardcore P-car nuts who deem rear-engine sports cars as the only acceptable vehicle to don the Stuttgart crest. The BMW E30 has become a symbol of greatness and what initially drew thousands to the company in the first place: the ultimate driving experience. And for Mercedes, few classics capture the imagination more than the W123. Perhaps the most durable Mercedes-Benz ever, this car combines restrained good looks with over the top engineering that had customers coming back into showrooms for more. Admittedly, this wasn’t very often when you built a car that could easily cover half a million miles at a clip.

1969 Mercedes-Benz Unimog

$_57 (3)

Now HERE is a Unimog that is all set to be converted into my most badass of RVs. Used in Desert Storm by the Belgians, it’s been used as a cabinetry truck most recently. What I love, besides the quintessential Mog-ness, is that it has 90% of the hardware already installed for some fold-down beds. With the Pohl Cabinetry decals removed, the reversed H.E.L.P. on the front would be a great entrance into a campground, and by campground, I mean anywhere I want to sleep because nothing will stop a Mog.
