1983 Volkswagen Cabriolet 16V

The Volkswagen market is fairly fickle these days. Some low mile, original cars go for big bucks; other times, its unlikely modified cars that draw the money. But it seems in general that the 16V Scirocco and original GTi are the two shining stars right now for 1980s Volkswagens. What do you get when you put them together and chop the top off? A 16V Cabriolet, of course! Granted, this isn’t how this car was delivered from the factory, but if you’re looking for the best of three world, perhaps you can enjoy this Cabby modified in the style of OEM:

Motorsport Monday: 034 Motorsports GTI RS

Being a fan of older Audis – and owning one – I’ve followed with much excitement the development of a small California-based tuning firm called 034 Motorsports. 034 – a reference to the 5-cylinder Audi motor part numbers – has taken a niche community and turned it into a flowering business. Initially starting with turbo modifications to the older 5 cylinder cars, the folks that make up the brain trust at 034 created some legendary Audis – most notable, the 1,000 horsepower turbocharged 80 quattro. But the reality is that these now 25 year old cars make up a very small percentage of the tuning market, so 034 turned to the much more popular A4 and Volkswagen GTi crowds, creating two stunning cars in the process. Less spectacular but stunningly effective was the A4 Time Attack car which went through several different engine configurations; but much more notable and impressive is what 034 attempted next; mid-mounting a V6 turbo into a 2001 GTi. The results are nothing short of stunning:

1984 Volkswagen GTi

The GTi is certainly no stranger to these pages, and recently we’ve seen in influx of both clean original examples and customized rides as well. Selling a modified car means that the buyer really has to want and like all of the modifications that are sometimes very subjective. Today’s GTi has undergone a full repaint and has suspension and wheel modifications that make it look quite purposeful; the question is, are they to your taste?

1984 Volkswagen GTI with 25k miles

5515270

GTI values are climbing like Yvon Chouinard: untethered and towards a future of helping well-to-do people be subtly cool with expensive recycled utilitarian objects. If you’re ready to make as good an investment as can be made when betting on soon-to-be classic “normal” cars, this may well be the one to buy. Purchased 3 years ago at an estate sale, the owner has taken the time to take care of all the little things and make this 25k-mile GTI look like it’s exactly that. In the face of all the tuner Mk1s and crazily-priced Caddys, I’d take this low-mile gem any day. It may not be all-original or perfect, but isn’t that kind of great? It’s here to be enjoyed, and you could enjoy the heck out of this thing for a long time and not even get close to 100k miles.

1984 Volkswagen GTI

Have you ever wanted a Mk1 GTI? I have since about 6th grade. My 2.0’d Caddy is as close as I’ve gotten, but some day the original German hot hatch will inhabit my car barn (so will another Caddy). If the car barn ever happens, it would be a good indicator that I have the kind of money where I can drop $10k on a GTI and feel good about it. Considering how GTI prices have been creeping up these past few years, getting this one for that price suddenly seems reasonable. Seriously, start by looking at the undercarriage; it’s painfully immaculate. Then you pull back to the clean-but-unique exterior and tip your head in to a tastefully improved cabin, and you’re looking at a GTI that is unhyperbolically listed as “possibly best in state.” It might be the best period.
