1987 Audi Coupe Quattro – REVISIT

The rare to see Audi Coupe Quattro that we featured a little over a week ago has popped back up on Ebay with some new, better photos and a better description. Included are shots of the underbody corrosion that will likely scare less devoted fans away. The custom interior and revised exterior will also polarize fans, but this remains one of the few true Coupe Quattros in the U.S.. Bidding as of writing is already fairly strong at $4,000 – about the cap of what I’d consider this car worth currently but some may wish to pay more for the exclusivity:

1987 Audi 4000CS Quattro

The less glamorous version of what was a fantastic chassis and engine combination, the Audi 4000 quattro brought rally-bred performance to the masses. You really could think of it as the original “WRX” because while the big-brother Quattro that stole all of the headlines in its day is currently a reasonably good value compared to some of its contemporaries, when they were new the turbocharged, box-flared brother was simply out of reach of most enthusiasts. Original sticker price of the Quattro put it around the same price as a well-equipped Porsche 911; equivalent today to a base model R8. It was therefore very exciting to see a nearly identical drivetrain layout passed down to the more pedestrian sedan version, complete with a similar-sounding inline-5 and locking differentials. You got all of this in a slick-looking 4-door package for around $20,000 – not cheap, mind you, but half the price of the Quattro. For many fans of the Quattro package, it proved to be legendary in its own right:

1987 Audi Coupe Quattro

Thought they recently have surpassed the 25 year importation boycott into the United States, it’s not likely that you’re ever going to see many of this model car on these shores. Sure, there’s a group of Audi enthusiasts who are particularly excited when they see a B2 Coupe Quattro pop up for sale – a truly rare event in the U.S.. However, clean models demand a serious premium because of their rarity – a premium which pushes them squarely into the price point of the turbocharged, box flared big brother. Though the drivetrains are for the most part the same, the addition of the turbo, bigger wheels and flares changes the category of ownership from neat footnote to headline splash. As such, it’s understandable why the Coupe Quattro is such as niche vehicle. Nevertheless, it’s really neat to see one for sale in the U.S., and this occasion is no different.

1987 Audi 4000CS Quattro

“It was bound to happen”. Over the past few months we’ve seen a spike in Audi 4000 Quattro prices, and with the spike the nice examples have started to come out of the woodwork. As a $2,500 car, you keep it until it dies. As a $5,000 car, you treat it well and it changes hands from time to time. Once prices crest $10,000 – prices that 4000s haven’t brought since the 1990 – people start flipping them. It makes sense; the 4000 Quattro is a great car but for $13,000 you can get many nicer, faster cars. Last week I wrote up a Tornado Red 1985 4000S Quattro that had reported fresh paint and seemed to be a good example, but failed to push a price as high as I expect the owner was looking for. Today’s example is arguably a bit nicer, but shown in the same shade – will you be seeing red?

1985 Audi 4000S Quattro

When I started at GCFSB, it was my mission to raise awareness of two of the most unappreciated cars in German motoring – the Audi Coupe GT, and the Audi 4000 Quattro. Of course, those were my first two cars so it makes sense that there would be sentimental value, but they are genuinely good cars that often get overlooked for not being Ur-quattro enough. I’ve written up some quite nice ones over the past few months, including a Graphite Metallic 1986 4000CS Quattro and Alpine White 4000S Quattro, a car that stunned most of the B2 Audi world by pushing well into the teens. Granted, perhaps it was the perfect storm, but we’ve seen sellers asking serious premiums for mint condition, original 4000s and GTs and today is no exception. Looking splendid in fresh Tornado Red comes this 1985 example:

1987 Audi 4000CS Quattro

As a general rule, we don’t feature project cars on GCFSB.com, but occasionally a rare case comes up that warrants attention. Such is the case with today’s 1987 Audi 4000CS Quattro. Just as with the 90 20V quattros I wrote up the other day, finding a good example of one of these workhorses is quite hard. In general, they were ridden hard and put away wet, and when coupled with serious depreciation they have mostly faded into the corners of people’s minds. Despite this, the 4000CS Quattro remains the blueprint for Audi’s sales success – while the Turbo Quattro Coupe gained most of the attention, it was really the 4000 (80 in ROW) that brought the quattro drive train to the masses. Today’s example is one of the last of the B2 chassis to arrive in the U.S., a Tornado Red snow machine:

Selling my ’87 Audi 4000CS Quattro, this is a clean maintained 4000 with all of the desirable options. A true find for the right enthusiast. Just a little over 200k on the shell. Original owner was an Audi specialist in NH and I purchased it from the second owner who had it for more than a decade. I am going to start with the bad, I do not need to sell this car, just came across an opportunity to purchase a vintage rally car and I would like to go in that direction.

Car runs and drives but has a serious oil leak. It needs the valve cover gasket replaced. I have the part but have not replaced it yet as I also have a rebuilt head, ported. polished with a 272 cam and VW GTi 16v lifters to go on it and wanted to do it all the same time. Also has a noisy throw out bearing, but does not effect the operation of the clutch. Now the good…. (much longer list….) Rust repaired, both sides painted

-Red Leather…. Two (of 100 ever made!) complete sets, one drivers seat has bolster damage and one passengers seat is pretty trashed. Full sets of door cards for both.
-Quattro Script cloth seats…. Two complete sets front/rear and door cards. One mint the other 7 out of 10
-Two sets of stock wheels one painted white with good snow tires (Firestone Winterforce)
-One set of 15×7 Ronal R8’s with Dunlop’s
-Old School Jamex Lowering Springs
-Euro Glass Housings, wired with H4’s
-CD player that matches the factory red interior lighting
-Working Sunroof.
-Factory trip computer in perfect working order.
-New Windshield
-Recent brakes, all OEM Audi Calipers
-All recent fuel lines under hood

-Good spare 2.2 had good compresion, 150k pulled out of a parts car
-Ported/Polished head with 16V GTi lifters and a Blausport 272 Cam, ready to bolt on.

-Blausport rear sway
-Short throw shifter
-OEM mud gaurds
-Boxes of spares

Like the Audi S6 Avant I wrote up the other day, this car has had some enthusiastic owners. The collection of parts is really one of the more impressive ones posted on one of these cars that I’ve ever seen. Work like the rust repair is something most 4000 owners don’t undertake but is a massive benefit for the next owner – rust on the rear arches is very common on these cars. The red interior, while not for everyone, is one of the more desirable and sought after interiors on this car, and it comes with two sets! Euro lights and a bunch of go-faster parts are also great, but the gems are the 15×7 Ronal factory option wheels; they can be found, but are pricey when you track them down.

These are pretty simple cars that can be an easy DIY project if you’re mechanically inclined, and most if not all of the parts are there to make this a really solid car on a reasonable budget. With the glut of parts included, you can pick your favorite color combination and sell the extra parts – between the wheels and interiors, you could fairly easily recoup at least half of the purchase price if not more. If you really wanted a great snow car or ice racer, they just don’t get much better than this!
