One of the cars I’ve most loathed while writing up was an E36 with a GM V8. That horrendous Frankenstein belonged in the bottom of the Florida waters, but this BMW/GM combo is done with a bit more professionalism, and perhaps taste. By shoving a Corvette engine and strapping a supercharger on top, this shop has taken one of the best-handling cars ever and turned it into a rolling-burnout monster. The exterior is show-car loud, but, all things considered, I actually kind of dig the graphics. Considering the performance of this thing, it’s not a bad fit.

As we close out the year here at GCFSB, it’s safe to say that 2013 could be considered the year of the M3. With the original E30 leading the charge on the value charts, we’ve seen the effect trickle down and values have begun to creep up on its successor, the E36 M3. With the E36, however, there were several different variants available, some being more popular than others. Curiously, the M3 sedan was a tad bit lighter than its two-door sibling, making it the not so obvious choice for the track day enthusiast. Does the automatic gearbox in this example for sale in Florida diminish the fun?

1 CommentThe BMW 2002 is a legendary car that defined the small sports sedan category by most accounts. Compact, rear wheel drive, and with enough power to have fun, you could drive the 2002 at 9/10ths most of the time without crashing at breakneck speed. Try pushing today’s cars to their limits; imagine if you could get a new M4 into a 4 wheel drift on an exit ramp – what speed would you have to be going? Probably faster than the original top speed of the 2002 is my guess, and the ability to drive a slow car fast is what makes some older cars so appealing. But for some people, that base small sedan just isn’t enough, and they go about upgrading the original car. I’m certainly not opposed to this, as it’s something I did with my Audi Coupe – take a later model, higher output motor that is in the same character as the original motor and Viola! Instant happiness. I can only imagine the smiles that this S14 motored 1968 1600 generates then:

2 CommentsIt’s always been a dream of mine to have a car that can do rolling burnouts at highway speeds. A recurring object of this desire is a big, insane Mercedes for the sheer madness, but making a monster M3 is always an entertaining proposition. As opposed to most modified E36s, the exterior of this M3 is almost completely, beautifully stock. It doesn’t even have a spoiler, which is an instant E36 mojo-killer. What it does have hiding behind the commuter-car exterior is an insane 606 horsepower at the rear wheels. That’s roughly 700 at the crank. Driving it will most certainly induce one kind of fear, while the maintenance and tuning will elicit another. But if you’re going to turbocharge an E36, this is exactly the way to do it.

Comments closedThe E36 M3 was lauded as one of the greatest handling cars of all time, but those of us in the US were always a little disappointed that the M3 made due with 240hp here throughout its lifespan, while the Euros ended up with a 321hp beast that makes the E46 seem like a lot less of a leap than it was here. There were many ways to go about fixing the lack of power, but few are more reputable and holistic than Dinan’s packages. With just an intake, chip, and exhaust, the first M3 I drove had a healthy dose of aggression. Today’s comes with the full meal deal, earning the Dinan badge and a Euro-shaming 340hp out of the supercharged 3.0l. That’ll be plenty for me, and it carries the bigger stick without raising its voice, just some Dinan blocks at each corner. This example is cherry in color and condition, having covered just 38k miles. With BMW’s endorsement of Dinan, examples like this may well become the most sought-after, especially when they are this well cared for.
