1993 Porsche 911 RS America

Over the past few weeks I have featured an abundance of ultra-low-mileage collectible 911s and I know the common refrain has been that these are, to a degree, a waste. As beautiful and interesting as these wonderful low-mileage examples are, they are not being used as intended. I feel everyone’s pain on this. Here we have another collectible 911, but this one is far from a pampered garage queen. Rather, this Grand Prix White 1993 Porsche 911 RS America has covered nearly 215,000 miles over the course of its 22 years on the road. The RS America in general has shown really nice increases in value over the past year, but it’s rare to come across one with more than 100K miles let alone twice that. That makes the valuation of this car difficult, but in many cases well-maintained high-mileage 911s still seem to fetch pretty good numbers. In addition, this one is a low-option car, only having 1 of the 4 available options selected upon delivery. That 1 option was A/C.

1994 Porsche 911 RS America

After what seemed like a run of RS Americas back in the Fall, it has now been a while since we have featured one so why not check back in on what was a rapidly accelerating market for these special 964s. The RS America, of course, was Porsche’s answer to US demand for something akin to the 964 Carrera RS. Based on the Carrera 2, the RS America shared the same powerplant and gearbox with other 964 models, but was lightened through a basic stripping of the interior, including the removal of the rear seats, and then fitted with sport suspension and whale tail. They were never really intended as a full replication of the European Carrera RS, but still provided buyers a Carrera 2 with far fewer luxuries and thus lighter overall weight. Available in only a small range of colors, with the majority produced in Black, White, or Red, here we have one of the optional colors: a Midnight Blue Metallic 1994 Porsche RS America, located in California, with 52,987 miles on it that appears to have been fitted with three of the four available options: A/C, sunroof, and radio.

1993 Porsche 911 RS America

Last week we featured a pretty rare Polar Silver Metallic RS America that had a few modifications, which will probably hold down its final selling price, but it nonetheless remains a car that we will not come across very often. Now we are going to take that level of rarity up a notch. Here we have a Fly Yellow 1993 Porsche 911 RS America, located in Maryland, with 45,000 miles on it. Unlike the Polar Silver example this RS America retains its originality and looks pristine throughout. Those who have been reading here for a while will know that I love most any bright-colored 911 and that I am particularly fond of those in yellow. So when I came across this one I instantly knew it had to be shared. This is indeed a special car.

Few models in the 911 range epitomize the sharp increase in value we’ve seen with air-cooled 911s better than the RS America. While the asking price for many of these cars has tended to far eclipse those actual values, we are still seeing these trade for quite a bit more than just a year or two ago. The RS America always traded at a premium relative to other non-Turbo 964 variants for the simple fact of its rarity and sporting nature, but for a time it was rare to see one priced above $60K or $70K. Now, it has become almost as rare to find one priced below $100K! So while the RS America may have begun its life as a less expensive alternative to the Carrera 2 it is now a far more expensive proposition. The example we see here is a rare Polar Silver Metallic 1993 Porsche 911 RS America, located in Oregon, with 57,934 miles equipped with 3 of the 4 available options: air-conditioning, limited-slip, and radio.

As collectors scamper to snap up every rare variant of the air-cooled 911, prices simply continue to increase for almost any car, but especially those with elevated sporting pretensions. Such is the case with the model we see here, the 911 RS America. The RSA was Porsche’s response to the desires of its customers who wanted a 964 Carrera RS and while the RSA isn’t quite the stripped-out track-focused car that the Carrera RS was, it still provided buyers with a lightened alternative to the standard Carrera 2 along with sport seats and sport suspension. The RS America was produced in ’93 and ’94 and the example here comes from that second year of production. Options were limited on these cars, but this one has had the optional A/C fitted.
