1993 Porsche 911 RS America – Revisit

pic

The first car we featured in our RS America Double-take has come back around for auction. Presumably, the dealer who bought it from the original seller is now looking to capitalize on the rapidly escalating market for these cars and has wasted little time in putting the car back up for sale. The asking price for this RS America in our original feature was $60,000 and with bidding for this auction already at $71,985 that’s already a decent bit of appreciation. At this point the reserve is unmet so we’ll have to see just how high this one might go.

Double Take: 1993 Porsche 911 RS America – Collector or Racer?

The RS America is another example of a car Porsche produced as a means of satisfying enthusiast desires for production cars that were unavailable on the US market. In this case, the highly sought after car was the 964 Carrera RS, a completely revised, track-focused, version of the standard Carrera 2 that was both lighter and also more powerful than its production brethren. The RS America was never intended to fully mirror the Carrera RS in its extreme nature, but rather sought a less aggressive but nonetheless still enthusiast-oriented package featuring a stripped interior, sport suspension, and much fewer options. Today, their rarity makes them prized commodities on the 964 market as the two listings below should make clear. Here we have two examples of a Guards Red 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera RS America that fall in fairly different parts of the market. One is a higher mileage RSA that has seen some track time, while the other is a pristine, low-mileage example, with a stratospheric asking price. We’ll begin with the tracked car.

1993 Porsche 911 RS America

Porsche has always striven to maintain its racing pedigree by providing factory cars for enthusiasts who desire to live the life of a weekend racer. In some cases those cars were produced so as to meet homologation standards, but in others, like with the 964 RS America, the cars were produced at the behest of a customer base that demanded something more than the standard car. While mechanically quite similar to a base 964 Carrera, its stripped interior and host of deleted items allowed the RS America to come in at under 3000 lbs and provide Porsche’s customers with a base for taking their car to the track. The car featured here, a White 1993 Porsche 911 RS America located in Florida, was originally a fully-optioned car, but has subsequently had the A/C and radio deleted. This car also features an interior fully outfitted for racing and front and rear spoilers from the RSR and Carrera RS respectively.

1994 Porsche 911 RS America

In order to satisfy the desires of Porsche enthusiasts seeking something a bit more hardcore than a standard 964 Carrera 2, in 1993 Porsche released the RS America, a limited run lightened model that came without such features as power steering, A/C, and even a radio, but included a whale tail and sport suspension. A radio, sunroof, limited-slip differential, and A/C could be optioned onto the car, but it still came in at a lower weight than a standard Carrera 2. While the RS America remains a far cry from the much more potent and lighter 964 RS available in Europe, it still provided modest gains in an effort to improve driving dynamics for those buyers seeking such things. These cars remain relatively rare but do pop-up from time to time for sale and here we have a 1994 Midnight Blue Porsche 911 RS America located in California. This one is fully optioned and has seen 112,500 miles.
