1990 Mercedes-Benz 560SE

$_57 (1)

One of the rarest W126 Mercedes-Benz S-Classes ever produced was one we never saw here on US shores: the 560SE. A mere 1,251 were ever manufactured between 1988 and 1991. This was a short-wheelbase version of the flagship 560SEL sedan, which at first would seem to be a bit of an odd combination. Most who were in the market for this well optioned car would want the extra rear legroom, hence the low production numbers. Before the days of the W124 based 500E/E500, however, there were perhaps some that were hungry for the largest engine in the range in something just a bit smaller.

With much of the W126 production eligible for import to the US, this 1990 560SE will soon be legal to bring over to these shores in 2015. With so few produced, a car like this for sale in Hamburg, Germany is a way to stand out from the rest of the W126 crowd.

1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Coupe

As I was winding down what was quite a long week Friday evening, I happened to catch the original Thomas Crowne Affair on one of the upper cable channels. This was a fantastically scripted movie with one vehicle featured prominently throughout: a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow 2-door sedan with coachwork by H.J. Mulliner, Park Ward Ltd. Built in very limited numbers, this was a gentleman’s express of epic proportions, with vast amounts of wood and leather to ensconce those fortunate passengers inside and a pushrod V8 under the bonnet with “adequate” horsepower. This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Coupe for sale in California could almost be considered that car’s contemporary, but with a decided German slant. Even though it might look a bit classic, it was thoroughly modern, with a 4-speed automatic gearbox, Bosch fuel injection and four-wheel disc brakes. Want to be the envy of the forecourt at the country club? Here’s the perfect coupe to do it in.

Double Take: Early Mercedes-Benz W116s

Even though it’s old enough to be considered a classic, the W116 Mercedes-Benz S –class seems to lack the following that its predecessor, the W108 or its successor, the W126, have garnered. Today, we’ll take a look at two W116s which appear similar on the surface, due to their golden huge, but are, in fact, rather different. First up is this 280S for sale in Germany equipped with a 4-speed manual gearbox, a combination we never saw here in the US market.

1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Coupe

I was sitting at my local pub yesterday, watching football while winding down my weekend, when suddenly a glint of chrome across the block caught my eye. It was a W111 Mercedes-Benz Coupe. Sitting in the passengers seat, a dog stuck his head out the window as the car passed through the intersection, looking pleased with life. Wouldn’t you be cruising around in such a classic? Besides a vintage British roadster, I can’t think of anything better to enjoy these crisp fall days here on the East Coast than with a pillarless Mercedes-Benz coupe. This 280SE for sale in California was repainted about a decade ago, but wears a mostly original patina.

Ministerial Transport: 1997 Mercedes-Benz S420 & 1995 Mercedes-Benz S320

As much as world leaders bang on about climate change and conservation, what is it that we typically see in the car park at the G7 Summit? Big black sedans. With security for heads of state of utmost importance, it’s easier to pack in a bunch of armor and defense systems into a car like the Audi A8 of German Chancellor Angela Merkel than it is a Toyota Prius. The consummate state limousine for many nations has always been one car: the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The 1990s saw the chains move for this perennial favorite, growing larger in almost every dimension with a new V12 engine on offer and a myriad of electronically assisted accessories. The following two black W140 sedans represent the lower end of what was on offer in the US market, each with low mileage. We’ll start with this 1997 S420 for sale in Texas.
