1990 Porsche 944 S2 Time Capsule For Sale

Hat tip to RarestRX for finding this fine S2.

I used to have a thing for shoes when I was younger.  I was obsessed by them, I would cut Nike ads out of magazines and tape them to my Trapper Keeper.

Yeah I am old.

Thinking about this sort of explains my fondness for the Porsche 944 cars.  As I grew up my thing for shoes turned into a fixation for cars.  Is it any small wonder the 944 looks so much like a shoe.  Look at a picture of the Nike Legend and look at a 944.  Creepy huh?

I dunno, maybe that is just me.

Here is a pristine example of a 1990 Porsche 944S2 with a scant 15k miles.

1990 Porsche 944 S2:

From the seller –

“Hey Guys,

I wanted to offer this to my Rennlist brothers before it goes on Ebay.

1990 Porsche 944 S2

15,952 Original Miles

Guards Red, Black interior
5 Speed manual.

This car was kept in a climate controlled Warehouse and only driven on weekends. Bought from the original owner. Every peice of service history was saved, even the original Window Sticker.

I thought my 928S was in great condition. This 944 is simply incredible.

Truly a time capsule piece.”

Beautiful car, I have made my fondness for the S2 cars well known.  90% of the turbo performance with 50% less headaches.  I know that is fuzzy math but that is my perception.

This is as fine an example that you will ever find.  Is it $20k fine?  I am not sure, $20k is a great deal of money for any S2, even one as fine as this.  But, if you are looking for the absolute best then this is the car for you.

2006 Dinan MINI Cooper S2 For Sale

I have blogged fanatical about a few of these.  Dealer tuned these cars are far more rare than similarly equipped John Cooper Works tuned cars.

2006 Dinan MINI Cooper S2:

From the seller –

“Dinan s2+ mini cooper s – Dinan serial # s20508

We are making in the room in the garage, so our beloved Mini needs a new home. It has been garage kept, Florida car, BMW enthusiast owned and professionally maintained/detailed on a regular basis. This car handles like it is on rails. Night/Day difference compared to a stock Cooper S, and substantially better than a JCW. This car drives great and has an amazing sound track, needs nothing but a caring owner.  Very rare Mini, less than a hundred Dinan S2 Minis in existance.

– All major service has been completed including a new ATI Crank Pulley that was just replaced with new belts, etc. last month.  Crank pulley’s typically fail in the 60-70k mile range, even on 05’-06’ R53’s.  This Mini has primarily Florida Highway miles & needs nothing.  – All minor items were replaced before the factory warranty expired.  All service/maintenance performed by Orlando Mini and Maitland Imports Mini Service.  Only the best & highest quality parts used to create the ultimate street MCS.  There are minor rock chips typical of a car of this age to be expected, other than that, no cosmetic blemishes to speak of.

– NEW Conti Extreme Contact DW’s performance tires – 2000 miles on them

– Mobil 1 Oil changes every 3k miles

Dinan S2-MINI Cooper S

The Dinan S2 program takes MINI Cooper S performance to an even higher level, increasing output to 205 horsepower as well as upgrading the suspension system. The S2 engine program features substantial increase in supercharger boost pressure in addition to intake and exhaust enhancements, resulting in eye opening acceleration and handling capabilities beyond compare. In addition to the High Flow-Cowl Induction Intake, a larger bore throttle body is employed, further improving the engine’s ability to breathe for even more power and crisp throttle response. The Stage 3 Suspension System ensures that the MINI has the necessary grip for tight and predictable handling as well as providing a dramatic reduction of under steer, enabling the driver to take full advantage of all 205 horses through the turns. At the same time, the suspension system maintains a surprisingly comfortable ride, vastly more compliant and absorbent than more typical suspension packages where low and stiff tend to be the standard formula. One drive in the Dinan S2-MINI will have you convinced that ride comfort and crisp handling don’t have to be mutually exclusive with proper engineering. The Dinan S2 program delivers the acceleration and handling that make the MINI driving experience that much more exciting, without compromising drivability , reliability or warranty coverage.

The Dinan S2-MINI Cooper S features: Boost Upgrade System; Stage 5 Engine Software; High Flow-Cowl Induction Intake; Free Flow Exhaust; High Flow Throttle Body; Strut Tower Brace; Stage 3 Suspension System (Koni Adjustable Shocks, Dinan Springs, Larger rear anti-roll bar, and Camber Plates) ; Signature Floor Mats; Serial Numbered S2 Plaque; Dinan Deck Lid Badge.

Dinan Stage 2+ (The + is: Revolution Motor Works street Cam, tune, and JCW -blue- injectors) Dyno tuned by RMW to 197hp/180tq at the wheels. This translates to approx 225hp at the crank. It has the perfect amount of power for the chassis.

Additional upgrades:

– RMW Street Cam & Tune

– JCW Injectors

– Powerflex Poly front control ARM bushings (OEM control ARM bushings wear quickly, a known weak point)

– ATI Crank pulley (better than OEM & will outlast the car)

– 22MM rear sway bar

– Hotchkis H-Sport Adjustable Rear Control ARMS (factory rear control arms are a weak point of the suspension & with any suspension there is too much camber that can’t be dialed out without adjustable control ARMs)

– RMW/ARP high strength wheel studs. Custom ordered from ARP only 1 of 10 pairs made for a 06’ MCS (makes wheel install much easier)

– ATE Power Disc Rotors w/Bav Auto Pagid Red Street Pads (within 5k miles)

– Voltage Hood Scoop

– K&N reusable Air Filter (Dinan was disposable type filter)

– New Interstate High Output OEM fitment battery

– V1 Hardwired to factory fuse block

– OEM Sport Grill

– Shadow line black out package for chrome trim, with black Cooper side grills.

– Lifetime 20% window tint

– 3M Clear Paint Protection for front end/hood, rear 1/4’s, & Headlights (the headlights are brand new under the clear film)

(Over $13k for S2 & everything else)

Factory Options:  (everything you would want and nothing you don’t need)

Factory LSD

HID Headlights

Multifunction Steering wheel w/cruise

Harmon Kardon Enhanced Sound

Heated Seats

Anthracite Headliner/trim panels (makes a HUGE difference for interior appearance)

Mini ‘Seven’ S.E. Piano Black Trim

Chrome Line Interior

Fog lights

Rear Fog light

Aux Audio Input

– Without sunroof this car saves an estimated 100lbs from the highest point of gravity and weighs in around 2600lbs.

– Currently wired for Sirius Satellite Radio with a Stiletto 2 receiver.  I am willing to leave the Sirius Car Kit wiring in place and you can add your own Stiletto 2 Sirius unit.  (you can plug & play a Stiletto 2 receiver that can be had of eBay for relatively cheap).”

MINI purists will tell you, and I suppose I am becoming one, that the ’06 R53 MINI is where this car peaked.  They were the pinnacle of performance and reliability for the model.  I have been driving a ’08 John Cooper Works MCS and trying to tell myself otherwise and it just is not working.

Outside the Dinan set up this car is wonderfully upgraded with all sorts of suspension work, mild motor mods, and appearance bits.  It has also been well maintained.  The oil changes every 3k is key, if you follow the MINI scheduled maintenance protocol you risk doing serious damage to your motor.

Current bidding is up to $12k with the reserve not met.  I would pay $16k for this all day, let’s see if the seller agrees.

1991 Porsche 944S2 Cabriolet

Even though they were somewhat derided by Porsche purists at the time, the 944 and 968 are getting a second look these days, no thanks in part to the fact you now have Porsche SUVs and sedans roaming the planet. One of the rarer versions of the 944 was the S2 Cabriolet, which was sold only in 1990 and 1991. The S2 version of the 944 brought a revised engine and gearbox, along with subtle styling updates. These 944 Cabriolets are a great way to enjoy open air Porsche motoring on a budget.

1991 Porsche 944S2 Cabriolet on eBay

1991 Porsche 944 S2. Fresh service, new timing belt, new water pump. Electric top. Low miles, 90% remaining on tires. Great first Porsche!

The ad’s description is rather sparse, but from the looks of things, this appears to be a rather honest, unmolested 944 Cabriolet. From the clean interior, original Blaupunkt radio and tidy engine bay, this car is making the right noises for me. I’ve always wanted a 944 or 968, but to be honest, I’ve always had my sights set on the hardtop. This car is making me rethink that preference.

1992 Porsche 911 Turbo S2

Of all the 911 generations that have come and gone, the 964 is probably my favorite, blending the classic profile with some nice smoothing out touches such as modern bumpers and updated wheels. This is an interesting 964 version, and rare. There were only 20 Turbo S models with the higher horsepower 3.3 liter turbo flat six and this is one of them. Interesting then, that someone decided to modify such a rare car with a later, factory slant nose conversion.

As rare as this 911 is, the modifications just don’t do it for me. The 18″ wheels jack the stance up way too much and the front end conversion is questionable. While the price is certainly in line with similar 911 Turbos of the vintage, and the mileage is good, this car is a classic example of messing with perfection. The changes make it look like a cheap kit car, not the serious autobahn stormer that it actually is.

1990 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet, 20k miles

With just under 4,000 produced for 1990, the Porsche 944 S2 cabriolet is one of those classics you don’t see every day. Finding low mileage ones without the automatic transmission is even more difficult. Here we have a clean example that fits both of the above criteria. The S2 model also had the biggest production four cylinder engine of its time, at 3.0 liters. With the manual transmission, this was good for 0-60mph runs in the low six second range.

The seller states:

Nicest S2 convertible available!! No dents or dings, smoke-free, no fading, blue leather interior, all original, 3.0 liter 4 cylinder, new convertible top, stereo does not work.

If this car checks out on Carfax and is mechanically sound, it could be a fairly economical way into open air Porsche motoring. Having driven an earlier non-S2 944, I can attest that it was not a slow car, but one that wasn’t a hair raiser. Even though it isn’t an iconic 911 and has a broken radio (and who needs it) you surely would be the only one on the block with a 944 cabriolet.

1990 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet

The 1990 model year marked the second to last year for the 944 and the first of a two year run for the rare 944 S2 cabriolet. Just shy of 2,500 cabriolets were ever produced. Carried over was the 16 valve, 3.0 liter four cylinder engine producing 208 horsepower.

1990 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet for sale on Craigslist Philadelphia

The seller states:

Here is a very fine 1990 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet. These cars are very rare, only a few thousand were imported into the USA.

This car is in mint condition, and has a new power top, New boot cover, New tires, and New brakes. Everything works great, no excuses or stories.

Has 102k miles, but you would never guess this by looking at or driving the car.

New OEM Blue canvas top and boot cover, Power top works flawlessly.

Original paint shines very brightly (these pictures were taken in dull light conditions), Car was always garage kept.

No Dents, No Rust, No scratches.

New tires on mint condition original wheels. New Brakes, 4 Piston Brembo brake setup is awesome! ABS standard

Interior is very nice, just a one tiny nick, in each seat bottom, about 1/2 inch long.

Dash has typical small cracks, and a dash pad to cover it. Has drivers side airbag.

Engine runs very smoothly ,sweet sounding to redline, no leaks, no oil usage.

5 speed Manual trans shifts very smoothly.

This car is really nice, and very addictive to drive. Powerful, balanced and light feeling, a real joy to drive.

MotorWeek road tested the S2 cabriolet back in 1990. They provide a good run down on how involved the assembly process was. Here’s the clip:

While over 100,000 miles might seem like a lot, the Porsche four cylinders are pretty reliable, given proper maintenance. Few cabriolets were produced in the first place, so survivors these days are becoming scarce. NADA lists average retail right around the seller’s asking price, so if the car could be had for between $10,000 and $11,000, this would be a good deal.
