Ersatz S2: 1990 Audi Coupe Quattro S2 Replica – REVISIT

About this time last year, a clean “Ersatz” S2 replica popped up on Quattroworld. With a tremendous amount of work completed, a collection of rare parts and very good condition, it was understandable why the asking price was a high $18,000. However, after 10 months and 3,000 miles, the new owner has chosen to list the car for sale. Condition is about the same as last year but it doesn’t appear that the new owner has sorted the air condition issue. As I said in the original article below and illustrated in my recent 20V Turbo 10K edition, I feel the market for these replica S2s is really about to fall apart. While it won’t be easy to import an original car, it will be possible and substantially cheaper than the asking price. Given the option, as clean as this car is I’d still sport for a real one for less money. How about you?

For a long time now, one of the most popular builds that Audi fans have undertaken is coupling the excellent 20 valve turbocharged inline-5 Audi motor to the capable, fun and good looking Coupe Quattro. It makes sense; out of the box, the heavy Type 89 chassis had a hard time feeling fast despite being equipped with the fantastic 7A 20 valve motor. Consequently, both the non-turbo motor and the Coupe got a undeserved reputation as being slow compared to the competition. However, just as the 4000 Quattro was a stout chassis in search of more power, adding the AAN 20 valve turbo to the Coupe Quattro was a match made in heaven – certainly, the factory agreed, since that was basically what they did to create the S2. This particular conversion goes to 11, upgrading the engine, swapping in a TDi-spec 6 speed and all the correct S2/RS2 bits to make a stunning looker with even more stunning performance:

The modifications and work done on this car is well documented. The car is fast and runs flawlessly. Pretty much everything has been cleaned, maintained, refreshed, upgraded, fixed and works. Interior was removed. Carpet shampooed. All interior bulbs were replaced, even the ones that were soldered. Even the underhood light bulb works.

After less than a year of ownership I’ve decided to sell this special CQ. The car has quite a story and this link explains it well:

Since then, it’s only covered about 3000 miles, including a wonderful drive to British Columbia and couple jaunts out to the coast. Work done recently includes fixing electrical bugs, misc HVAC, new starter and alternator, and installing dynamat throughout.

It’s a truly unique car – a modern classic in my eyes. This particular build simply takes the original to a new level that you’re not likely to see anywhere. Between the incredible engine, tremendous grip, comfort level, practicality, and rarity, it has it all. I’ll be sad to see it go, but I’ve been a Porsche guy since high school and came across a great Cayman S that I couldn’t say no to.

The car is in excellent shape and sports original paint with the wear you’d expect. The interior is exceptionally fresh looking and has been very well cared for. Of note is that the A/C is not operational. All the components have been installed (I purchased the car with the parts out) and tested, but some electrical work remains to get the compressor cycling properly.

Reading through the build list on this car, it’s easy to see the claimed $20,000 invested; indeed, I bet if I started to add up the details on my car I’d come up with somewhere around that figure too. The question is, does that make the car worth $18,000? Well, that’s a bit harder to justify – especially when you consider that there recently was a real factory S2 for sale in Canada for $10,000. I have to believe that over the next two years, the market price on these built S2 replicas is going to crumble as real cars make their way over since you can pick up a pretty good example for the equivalent of $5,000 – $6,000 in Europe.

However, about this car; it’s pretty awesome, it’s undoubtedly fast, it looks fantastic – there’s a lot to like here! I really like the incorporation of the correct S2 front end rather than the commonplace RS2 “catfish” bumper cover which often looks out of place. For me though, despite the great condition and quite impressive build sheet, I’m just not sure it’s worth $18,000. For that price, I’d really rather have very nice 944 Turbo or 968 in all honesty, but if the S2 is your goal, perhaps this strikes your fancy.

  1. How much for a real S2, with similar upgrades, and importation? Always difficult to get modification dollars back from a car but the comparison to the European stock S2 market (UK was RHD) is poor.

  2. Mcstiff, I think it is a very poignant comparison to talk about the soon-to-be importable S2s. For many, the prospect of having a real car assembled at the factory is more appealing than having a home-brewed creation even if factory parts were used. Granted, to some it won’t matter at all – but I’d choose the factory car if I could. You can pick up reasonable examples in Germany – so left hand drive – for between $5,000 and $7,000 these days. For comparison’s sake, that’s about the same rate as clean Coupe Quattros trade for here. If you want something a bit more special or rare, low mile or Avant S2s can be had around $10,000. Figure $3,000 – $4,000 for importation, and your range is $8,000-$14,000 for a real S2. That leaves you $4,000 for modifications or maintenance versus the previous ask on this car. Sure, it won’t be what everyone wants, but just like E30 Tourings, many would like the real deal.

  3. Carter, my point is that while this CQ does have a large sum spent on S2 parts it is also highly modified above the level of a stock S2. All the 1991 S2s on ebay.de are more than $7500 and have more than 100,000 miles so I think you math is fairly optimistic considering that prices are likely to increase with demand, when importation is legal. So, while it is easy to say “wait and import a 1991 S2” in reality the 1991 S2 has a 3b engine with 5 speed 01A and various other minor differences.

    As I said before, it is difficult to command ROI for modified parts but to a person who understands the parts list above, and want’s high WHP typ 89 Audi, a stock 3b S2 is not an equivalent. Someday the 3b S2 may be more collectable but this is a car that you can buy today, daily drive, and beat up on many sports cars for less than the price of a Scion. The E30 touring is a chassis that was not sold here (sedan only) so that is a different discussion.

  4. Oh by the way, if you really want a collectable Audi spend your $14k on a urQuattro as many of the clean ones sold in the US recently are being shipped back to Europe. The S2 is a great car (especially when modified) but the urQ seems like a better bet as an investment.

  5. Agreed on the Quattro, and you’re right – it depends a lot on your motivation. I’d personally prefer a more stock, original example – not necessarily as a potential collectable but just because I prefer clean, original examples. But, if I was going through the aggravation of importing a rare Audi, it would more certainly be a S6+ or V8 4.2 6-speed rather than a Coupe.
