The Personal S-Class Mercedes-Benz: 1991 560SEC vs. 1996 S600 Coupe

Mercedes coupes have always been an object of desire for me. Sure, they lack a little of the carefree fun factor of their open roofed counterparts, but a lot of the classics coupes have blended the conservative style of the sedans with a bit of verve you would expect with a personal luxury vehicle. A two-door vehicle of this size may seem indulgent, but for me, they are oh so right. One of our favorites here at GCFSB is the C126, more commonly known as the 380SEC and later 560SEC on these shores. For a decade, this car carried the large coupe torch for Mercedes-Benz fairly unchanged and was one of those cars of the 1980s people would instantly associate with the wealthy.

First, let’s take a look at this low mileage 560SEC for sale in New York.

Estoril Blue 1999 BMW 750il

8654_1_full

If you’re new here, my love for Estoril Blue is deep and unabashed. Part of this is sentimental, as the first M car I experienced and drove was Estoril, and part of it is that it’s just a damn gorgeous and deep color. I am instantly more intrigued by the F30 when they are in this uncommon hue. A while back I did a post with 3 different Bimmers all in Estoril, but today’s is a new one for me. Custom ordered from the factory, this owner (still the original) made a great choice and tacked on a few extra grand to his already-expensive E38 750il. It looks smashing, although the shadowline trim available on the 740 sports would make it even better. The V12 has less than 75k miles on it and it’s a BMW CCA member, supplementing the desirability of the great E38.

Ebony and Ivory: Two 1994 BMW 850CSis

IMG_3582

For there only being 225 in the country, 850CSis come across the eBay auction block fairly regularly. I’d much rather have a low-mileage one of these over any modern BMW coupe, and they’re trading hands for less than the gargantuan modern 6-series. You can go white with about 30k miles or black with about 70k miles. Whether price, color, or mileage guides your choice, you can rest assured knowing you will look – and be – way cooler in this than any E63 or F12 BMW big-coupe.

1989 BMW 750il

I’m not alone in my preference for the E38 7-series; its minor updates over the E32 seemed to really take the design to a new level of cleanliness and aggression. Relative to the well cared for E38s that still roam the streets looking amazing, most E32s look beat up, frumpy, ridden hard and put away wet. All that changes today though, as this is hands down the best E32 I have ever seen. Rocking lowering springs, M-Parallels, and a nice front lip, this black V12 beauty is the business. It’s not just a pretty face, either; it’s covered just 37k miles in its life and has had tiny issues tended to. It takes a really nice E23 for me to be more attracted than pretty much any E38; this is the first E32 that’s really ever required a second, third, and fourth glance.

Clean 1992 Mercedes 600SEL, good $ per cylinder ratio

1992 Mercedes 600SEL4

We love no reserve auctions. Particularly ones that start at under $1,000 for a car that once cost well over $100,000 when new. We’ve reported before about how these big Benzs with V-12s  can be a nightmare in terms of maintenance, but this one looked particularly clean and with no reserve, if the price is right, there may be some $s left over to help with inevitable repairs. I think the W140 probably isn’t as bad as the next generation of V12 Mercedes when it comes to work and cost to own, people just give it a bad rap because of the extra cylinders.
