The Volkswagen Fox was another interesting Brazilian import; called the “Gol” in other markets, the Fox was the new entry level car for Volkswagen in the late 1980s. With a low base price, many were without options but they got great fuel economy and offered a taste of Germany (albeit flavored in Brazil) for little money. A favorite amongst enthusiasts were the somewhat rare 2-door wagons, which offered one of the largest rear quarter windows ever produced and plenty of space to haul your load – slowly:

When it comes to Volkswagen customs, there are plenty of options to choose from. You can get everything from a Baja Bug to a Bugatti, Ferraris to Mercedes-Benz 540Ks, and GT40, 917K and even the Monkeymobile. But most of them look somewhat out of proportion, like a real example of the car stuck in funhouse mirrors. But sometimes, when they weren’t intent on making a copy of another car, these customs can actually look okay – and the Ventura Coupe is a good example of that. Sure, there are styling cues from Bitters, Toyotas and some Italian metal, but the Ventura has its own unique style and doesn’t scream “kit car” from its first impression. Looking lovely in red, this Brazilian-built Volkswagen is a rare sight on these shores:

2 CommentsFor a country that loves its trucks, it’s curious we have so few options when it comes to new compact trucks. The Japanese have been in the game for quite some time, but even their offerings have grown to the point of not quite compact of late. There have been rumblings that Ford is going to get back in the game with an updated Ranger and GM is about to unleash a new Chevrolet Colorado for those who many find their full-size offerings a bit too much. Beyond compact pickups, there was another option years ago, the car-based truck.
Still available in some markets from certain manufacturers, these type of trucks were mainly used for light hauling and delivery duties. Volkswagen decided it would try its hat at its own version of the El Camino formula by offering US customers the Mk1 Rabbit Pickup years ago, known as the Caddy elsewhere. Offered for a few years alongside Rabbits and GTIs, these small trucks have a dedicated following, with many folks tuning them or adding GTI trim. This diesel version for sale in Oregon is in splendid, original condition, having been owned by one family its whole life.

4 CommentsAny good enthusiast of foreign cars should have a list of which unicorns they want for each new year of eligible 25-year old import status. This Golf Country reminds me that 2017 will be a big year for me. Just look at it. The first time I saw and found out about the Golf Country I bled from my ears because my brain was spinning so hard. What… The… F? Lifted 4WD Mk2 Golf seemed like the coolest oddball that I’d never heard of. The one comes adorned with awesome Country decals with a ragtop sunroof and has covered just 113k miles. I’m setting an alarm to remind me to set my eBay followed searched to Golf Countrys in three years.

3 CommentsIt’s been a long time since I’ve written up a Scirocco, but this red one is a great way to get back into it. The main thing the Scirocco gives up to the Audi Ur-Quattro for me is the amount of wheels driving; it wins for me in the looks department. Refreshingly stock and with less than 140k miles, this could be a great buy.
