Now Legal for Import: 1990 Volkswagen Rallye Golf

Continuing with a theme I touched upon last week, I’m going to take a look at a few cars this week which are now legal for importation to the United States. It’s hard to believe more than 25 years have already passed since 1990, but that opens up a whole new portfolio of vehicles that weren’t certified by the US Department of Transportation and Environmental Protection Agency for US sale. The Volkswagen Rallye Golf almost made it to market in the US, but sadly, an executive at Volkswagen of America trumpeting this vehicle’s cause perished in the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing. With that, yet another homologation special slipped away from the grasp of the US consumer. This Rallye Golf for sale just a bit north of Stuttgart, Germany is one for the serious VW collector, having covered just over the equivalent of 20,000 miles. This is also one of the few I’ve seen with the rather tasty partial leather interior, featuring a variation on the GTI plaid in the seat inserts.

1997 Volkswagen Beetle

In the late 1990s, as Volkswagen introduced it’s New Beetle, few outside of dyed in the wool VW enthusiasts were aware that production of the original, air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle was still going on in Mexico. A few of these late model Mexican built Beetles made their way back to Europe. By then, these cars were a novelty more than anything else, outclassed as a mode of basic transport even by other models in the Volkswagen product portfolio. Still, there is something neat about seeing modern VW trim pieces in an otherwise vintage interior, similar to the 1967 Beetle from my childhood. 1972 Volkswagen Baja Bug

I haven’t really wanted a Volkswagen Beetle in roughly two decades. When I first start pouring through European Car, Eurotuner, and Hot VWs (in late elementary school) the sheer breadth of available parts made personalizing a Bug seem like a great idea. That quickly shifted to GTIs and S4s as middle school rolled around, and the old People’s Car fell by the wayside. After spending a few weeks in LA, however, I’ve been rebitten by the Baja Bug. They’re a hilarious mix of tough off-roader, tuner expression, and disposably replaceable project car. This example is beautiful and well-made without being over the top. The wide tires aren’t too tall, the interior is custom but mostly comfortable, and overall it’s a well-composed Bug that would turn heads on the streets and rip corners on the trail.

1995 Volkswagen Corrado

1995 Volkswagen Corrado

I’ve been banging on about Volkswagen’s misfortune with their diesel emissions scandal of late. Part of me is sitting back, without a care in the world as to what effect it will have on the company. Another part of me is feeling as if we’ve really lost the makings of a legendary car company. No matter what you might think of him, I’m going to cop a line from Donald Trump’s US Presidential Campaign and wish that someone would “Make Volkswagen Great Again.” Now, with my usual gripe out of the way, let’s take a look at this 1995 Volkswagen Corrado for sale in Ontario, Canada. Corrado sales in the US halted in 1994, but continued on for the model’s final year in 1995 north of the border. This example in Moonlight Blue Metallic looks sharp with the Recaro cloth interior and is equipped with dual airbags, a feature rarely seen on these sports coupes.

1988 Volkswagen Fox GL Wagon

The Volkswagen Fox is a model which is almost entirely overlooked by us. It’s not because we don’t like the concept of the entry-level Volkswagen brought to the U.S. from Brazil, but the budget pricing coupled with legendary 1980s Volkswagen reliability and build quality (cough cough) hasn’t exactly left a plethora of examples of these small VWs left to contemplate. The Fox was offered in three configurations – two door coupe, four door sedan and two door wagon. Without a doubt, it was the wagon which gets the most enthusiast attention these days. In profile, it looks a bit like a B2 Audi if they had made a wagon, and indeed pop the hood and you’ll see the same longitudinal configuration. Some parts are even interchangeable with the B2 Audis, like the steering rack. But more of this car was shared with the Golf than any Audi product, and though the Fox resurrected the Audi B1 nameplate here the two shared only a passing resemblance. Infrequently seen, these little wagons are neat cars that march to the beat of slightly different Brazilian drummers:
