1986 Volkswagen Scirocco 16V with 47k miles

The VW Scirocco never quite took off as much as the GTI did on US shores, but here’s a clean ’86 example that seems as if it was well loved. This 16V version represents the end of the line for the VW sports hatch, as 1988 was the last year it was offered stateside.

The seller states:

Up for auction is a 1986 (1987 Production year) VW Scirocco with 46000 original miles. The car is very clean there is not a spot of rust anywhere on the body of the car. The interior is in excellent condition there is no tears or cracks in any of the seats. The tires, timing belt, plugs, cap and rotor,battery,and coolant are new. I bought the car from the original ower who bought it new. He had a issue with the engine at 45000 miles and the car was parked for a long time. At some point in time he let his kid armed with a shop manual try to fix it… When I bought the car the head was pulled off. The owner told me he thought there was something wrong with the head?? I didn’t want to deal with it so I bought a used motor with 68000 miles on it. Which is in the car now. The engine starts, idles, and runs like new. The original motor with 45000 miles on it is included in the auction. It’s the perfect scenario.. Build the engine of your dreams with the original motor and drive the car in the meantime! I installed a stereo system with a high end alpine head unit, alpine speakers and a boston acoustic sub. It sounds amazing! The only issues that I know of are The passenger power window, AC, and aftermarket cruise control don’t work. I’ve only put about 1000 miles on the car since I put the motor in. The car is quick and a blast to drive. It also gets great gas mileage. I love the car, but I’m buying a porsche 928 and I only have room in the garage for one toy so the rocco must go.
-Also in the pics the dark areas on the front seats are not stains its just the grain of the fabric.
-Car has never seen snow.. I won’t even drive it in the rain..
-Extra fuel lines, injectors, alternator, starter, and AC compressor come with original motor.

With no reserve on the auction, it should be interesting to see what a low mileage 16V is worth these days. Even with an engine replacement, this seems like a pretty honest and original example.

2-Owner, Low-Mile 1974 Audi 100LS for sale

We come to this site, be it to read, write, or just ogle, because we share an affinity for something different.  That something different is German autos, unique in their attention to detail, unrivaled engineering, and strong (if restrained) styling themes.  Today we’ve got an important piece of German-car history that embodies these identifying elements, albeit one that I was heretofore unaware of.  Volkswagen bought Auto Union from Mercedes in 1965 with a main motivation being expanding production capacity for the Beetle.  Audi’s weak lineup led VW to place a moratorium on new model development, a command that was quickly disregarded by a top engineer.  He developed the Audi 100 on his own with VW only seeing it as a completed prototype.  It was good enough that they approved and released the 100 to significant commercial success.

This Audi 100LS has only had two owners over its 36 years and has covered just 50k miles.  It is thankfully not a garage queen, more a well-respected classic that’s not afraid to be used.  The look seems familiar at first but unique upon closer inspection, at first referencing recent Mercedes roots with the greenhouse and chrome trim followed by hints of Fiat in the tapered ends.  Engineering, design, and just the off-the-beaten-path nature differentiates it from more popular cars of the era and separates our tastes from the “standard” car guy or girl.

A testament:

This is a car that can be purchased and then driven with no issues. We drove it 5 hours to Waterfest some years ago, with no problems whatsoever and I would not hesitate to drive longer distances than that. Being an old car, there will always be things to tinker with if the owner chooses, but this is a turnkey, drive away toy- ready for cruising this summer. The mileage is accurate and I drove about a thousand miles each year.

The listing is worth reading if you’re interested in the car as it gives the impression that this has been a well-loved, well taken care of example of the first Audi under VW ownership.  It’s clean enough to show off yet not so perfect that it should be tucked away (no car should be, really), and sound enough to drive whenever you like.  The buy-it-now of $6,500 seems perfectly reasonable for someone out there like us who appreciates that which only German cars can provide.

1983 VW GTI Widebody for sale

Here’s a wee beasty, the likes of which you don’t see very often.  We all know the magic that surrounds the Mk1 GTI, but this has to be magic turned to 11.  A custom steel widebody kit has been grafted on, leaving it with the same classic silhouette but shifting it much lower and much wider.  This is no Heidi Montag though, as it comes with content to back up the extremely modified looks.

That’s a pretty serious upgrade list.  Some power, some brakes, some suspension with a dash of style thrown in.  It sounds like it’s been well taken care of, but the generality with which the mileage and condition are described necessitates further investigation.  That said, it’s a Mk1 VW, so even if/when things go wrong, there should be an reasonable fix.  The seller’s testament of daily driving is a positive note.  I always love the no-bumpers look, and the widebody intrigues me and certainly makes a statement, though something about it strikes me as not perfect.  I think it might be the side sills and width of the front spoiler; I’d prefer the fender flares by themselves.  Overall though, this is a very impressive Mk1 and must be an intense amount of fun.

Bidding is hot, with 20 bidders pushing it around $3.5k currently, but the reserve is not yet met.  Considering clean Mk1s are pushing into the $4ks and $5ks, if this can stay under $7000 I think it would be a good price for a well put together, unique, and fast Mk1.

High Mileage 1991 VW Vanagon Carat Projektzwo

Well I decided to post that high mileage 500E so if I’m not going to shy away from vehicles like that then how about this 207,000 mile Vanagon that looks great. A 200k mile Vanagon is not that unusual nor is it something really exciting enough to be included on this blog, but this one is a little different. Being a California car has probably helped this one stay looking super clean on the outside, but even the interior does not look like it has seen 200,000 miles.

What really got this van listed here though is the custom work, the H&R lowering springs a 17″ 5 spoke rims, and the Projektzwo full body kit really set this one off from the crowd. It even has a short shift kit and Neuspeed exhaust installed. I think the big Hella driving lights compliment the look of the body kit as well. The kit, which the seller says he bought direct from Projektzwo in Germany probably cost the seller over $3000 to get finished all told.

The seller says the engine was rebuilt at 100,000, but that was 100,000 miles ago so even though the seller states it doesn’t leak oil and has good compression you may want to give the engine a good listen.

Pricewise the opening bid price is $11,000 with the reserve not met. So to put that in perspective with the previously mentioned 500E, this Vanagon, which is several years older, has similar high miles, but was obviously never considered to be in the super car category like the 500E is being valued by at least $3000 more. That certainly makes you think a bit. What do you think? I think the seller may get more bids if they didn’t spell projektzwo wrong in their ad three or four times. (As of this posting they spelled it “projektwzo”.

Euro-spec 1978 GTI for sale

We all love a good GTI, especially the first generation.  The Europeans got the revolutionary hot hatch a few years before the States, and also benefited from an even greater sense of “less is more” with the Euro version.  Of course the US bumpers weighed down the ends a bit, as well as a clunkier, rectangular light setup instead of the classic Euro quads.  Today we have an imperfect-but-enticing Euro-spec GTI for sale in the SF Bay Area, in need of a little work but with a lot of great bits providing the foundation for a great A1 GTI.

That’s a lot of great mods for $2700, and I like that he ends his ad with “Cash Talks, if you seem like you’re going to take care of it thats more important than the money.”   This is definitely a guy who had a fun Mk1 project and is looking to pass it on to a kindred spirit.  The Audi 3A block originally came with 115hp, probably more now thanks to the upgrades, and either way a significant improvement over the original mill.  Sitting low on Weitech coilovers, I really like the subdued grey color scheme and roof spoiler.  It’ll need some work to be perfect, but I think this would be a really fun GTI with a great Euro-theme already established.  And you know what?  I kind of like that it’s a dirty little monster.  If I had a little more in the bank, I’d go offer $2500 and have some fun.

1996 Volkswagen Golf Harlequin

Created for the Volkswagen Design series for International auto shows, the Volkswagen Golf Harlequin was never supposed to catch on. However, Volkswagen decided to create a limited run of these interesting Golfs in 1996, dubbed the Harlequin. There were four different types of Harlequins, each having their own base color, which included Tornado Red, Ginster Yellow, Pistachio Green and Chagall Blue. In addition, special interior cloth, silver faced gauges and a few different wheel options were added extras.

Having owned a MkIII GTI, I understand the appeal of the Golfs from this generation. I wish I had my 1998 Anniversary edition GTI back, as it was all the car I ever needed. The Harlequin isn’t for everyone, but when was the last time you witnessed what could be mistaken as an assembly line mix-up turned into something cool?

1985 Volkswagen Passat (Quantum) Estate

The B2 Passat, also known as the Volkswagen Quantum stateside, was introduced in 1981 as a revision to the original Passat, introduced in 1973. The second generation Passat could be described as a prolific model range. In the early ’80s, the Passat was renamed the Corsar for the Mexican market and was produced in Brazil under the Santana moniker until 2006. The B2 chassis is still in production in China as the Santana, proving popular with taxi and police fleets. It has been announced that the Santana will end production in China in 2012. That’s staying power.

Here’s a clean, low mileage 1985 Passat wagon in Berlin that is being exported to the U.S., given this car just turned 25 years old and falls under classic status with the EPA and DOT.

The VW is currently located in Berlin, Germany and we include shipping to Long Beach port, CA, where it will arrive in a few weeks. As the year is 1985, this vehicle is classic in the US since January 2010 and therefore exempt of DOT/EPA. Tax and insurance for classic vehicles are low, so it’s not only the 40+mpg that will make this one a perfect money-saver. You probably know you can easily prepare these kind of VWs for biodiesel.

Being in love with the cars of the 80ies for their quality, we have always been looking for german classics with lowest miles, but frankly, we haven’t once seen a station wagon in this condition. With only 38,000 original kilometers (=24,000 miles) this one is as close to new as you can possibly get. Factory paint is still shiny, walking around the car you will think it was one or two years old. There are maybe two or three chips, which were taken care of. The inside shows hardly any use. We took off the cover of the driver seat for the pictures, there is no use worth to mention.

Driving this VW, it feels like a new car, I must say. No noise, no play anywhere. No liquids dripping of course and there is the valid german roadworthiness certificate TÜV coming with it. The biannual test was passed at km 31,300 in June 2009. Whatever you touch in this car tells you that its life is still totally ahead. Turning the key the engine purrs as if saying: “Thanks man! And now where do we go?”

Bidding is already at $7,300 so even with the hassle of shipping it over, it seems there are several interested parties. With each passing year, it’s great to see interesting rides like this make their way over to what could best be described as a police state for car enthusiasts. When I was young kid, my grandparents had retired back home to Portugal. Right around when I got my license, they decided to sell their 1982 Peugeot 505 turbo diesel for a car with an automatic transmission, a Honda Civic 5-door hatchback. The Peugeot was in fantastic shape and my grandfather owned it from new, taking delivery of it at the factory in France. Sadly, this was the mid ’90s and there was no way of importing it legally.

With the budget crisis in the country, it would be reasonable for the DOT and EPA to get together and charge a flat rate to enthusiasts who would want to go to the trouble of shipping over a rare or unique piece. At the same time, maybe we could relax the year restriction to any vehicle 5 or 10 years or older. With current European safety standards and (at least for cars of German origin) the ever stringent TÜV (Technical Inspection Association) inspection, the cars coming from that continent would be just as safe, if not safer, than the ones Uncle Sam deems acceptable for us.

Low-mile White/Black Diesel/Gas Caddies for sale

As I’ve mentioned before, my first car was a white caddy.  It was an awesome little car, light enough to be fun, plenty weird, and irrefutably German.  Mine had a later 2.0, but these two options on eBay right now have very different motors but are each uniquely desirable.

The first is a very clean white diesel LX.  Mechanically, if you’re looking for an efficient and utilitarian car with personality, this is the one.  A Euro-market 1.6l diesel with just 60k miles and Jetta 5-speed gearbox highlight the restoration, along with a clean paint job.  I could do without the wheels, but this is a great (if plain) Caddy.

Next up we have something a little more fancy.  This black 1981 Sportruck is a little more Dubby, blacked out with quad rounds, lowered on some prettier 5-spokes, and supplemented with just about 16v-Scirocco everything.  It’s been thoroughly gone through top to bottom and is more show car than econo-commuter, but would still be a great little driver. Would have been nice if he provided more than thumbnails, though.

The diesels definitely command a premium these days, and this restored white LX is reserve-not-met at $5,600 with less than a day left.  The black one is just r-n-m at just over $2k, but should go up a bit in the 3 days it has left.  If it could be had for $5k or less, it would be a great purchase, and is probably the one I’d rather have.

1982 Volkswagen Scirocco project needs saving

This poor VW looks like someone ran out of time, money, or interest on it. It needs an engine and needs to have the interior reinstalled. It comes with some extra Euro and 16v parts for the reassembly. 82,000 miles on the body. Anyone want to finish this one? The ask is $1200, I suspect that it could be had for an even grand.

1990 Volkswagen Corrado G60 Bumblebee

This is a tastefully modified Corrado with lots of bright yellow. It has low miles, 50,000. Add on parts from Kompressor Kanada, Zender, Tial, Techtonics, Borla, H&R, Koni, and Zender show the car was liked. It has 18,000 on the rebuilt engine. The car is up with no reserve and starting bid under $2,000. The seller indicates it needs new axles and that it slips out of 5th gear. It isn’t clear how major these problems are. These problems will keep the price down, but a new owner will need to plan financially on expecting the worse just in case. Also not the low feedback seller, this should also keep the price down, but bid at your own risk.
