Clean 2004 R32 for sale

Now, I may have made my case for a used RS6 being more worth your $32k than a new R32, but my same reasoning makes me anxious to make some more money so that I can be realistically in the market for the original R32 at new base-level Golf price.  I like the MkIV R32 so much more than the MkV anyways.  Same engine, same AWD, but much better looking.  They’re around for up to $25k still, but the market has come down enough to be able to find nice ones under $20k if you’re patient.  This Reflex Silver example has covered just 39.5k miles and, despite a few wheel nicks and small scratches, is the total package.  Not many miles, overall beautiful condition, and good price make this a tempting prospect.

Scary Twin-Turbo R32 for sale

I remember reading about the HPA twin-turbo upgrade on a VW New Beetle when I was in middle school.  It blew my mind in many ways.  Then the MkIV R32 rolled around and they started working their magic on that.  Heaven, BiTurbo R32 is thy name.  HPA does extremely nice installations, creating a driveable monster out of one of my favorite cars.  This one is juiced up even more than I’d heard of before, with some 500hp at the WHEELS.

This exact package is truly one of my dream cars.  I’d take this over most Italians (288 GTO exempted), and it’s just right up there with a Turner Motorsports E30 M3 2.5 or RS4 wagon as the best thing possible.  Just epic.

At first I thought the HPA on the hood was a bit much, but the fact that it’s clear-coated over the carbon hood with the rest body-color is a nice touch.  This guy has done truly everything to make this the most insanely awesome R32 possible.  $85k is steep, sure, but it’s a proven turbo system on a great car with all the requisite upgrades to make it so much more than just some tuner car.  I’m jealous of the owner’s resources and ambition for making this car a reality.

Restored and TDI’d 1981 VW Rabbit Pickup

Ah, the first car.  Like the first love, it will always be special, though these cars are pretty special anyways.  Most of the time when you mention “Volkswagen Pickup” to anyone you get a scrunched up face and inquiries as to what the hell you’re talking about.  What I am talking about is an awesome little car.  In addition to its unique nature, my Pickup (known as the Caddy in the rest of the world) had great steering feel, a peppy engine, and an 1800 lb curb weight that made it plenty of fun in curves.  Eventually too many things went wrong and we had to sell it for something more reliable, but it went to a VW nut in Ohio, so I feel okay about it.  This example, for sale on eBay and located in Arkansas, is what I would have loved to do with my little Rabbit.  The ad says it’s been restored and it looks pretty nice inside and out, but the key here is a 1.6l turbodiesel.  Many Rabbit Pickups came with diesels, but those are known as, well… slow.  Real slow.   The turbo on this one sounds like it makes it a lot more fun while still returning Prius-like gas mileage.

I’d want to correspond with the seller a bit to get a better idea of the specifics than the ad provides, and “restored” may be a slight overstatement, but it looks like a clean and solid example of a fun car.  Useful, fun, and most of all unique, a truck like this is absolutely on my “must-own-again” list.

1989 Volkswagen Fox with 1,300 miles

The Volkswagen Fox was introduced to North America in 1987 model year to serve as a sort of Beetle like, entry level vehicle. Based on the South American market Volkswagen Gol, the Fox was sold as a two or four door sedan, with a two door wagon appearing in the lineup from 1988 to 1990. Power came from a fuel injected, 1.8 liter 8 valve engine mated solely to a manual transmission.

The seller states:

VW Collectors and Enthusiasts take note! This is a 1989 Volkswagen Fox Coupe WITH ONLY 1300 MILES!! This vehicle comes with a CA SMOG CERTIFICATE dated 02/09/10. IT WAS inspected by our mechanic and was found to be running and driving however it has been sitting for 20 years and we would recommend anyone to have it fully inspected by your local VW dealer. The A/C was blowing cold when we tested it.

This vehicle looks like it just came off the showroom floor…it may very well the only VW Fox in existence with the low of mileage and in the pristine condition. It appears to be an always garaged vehicle. It has only been driven 35 miles since 2004 and 165 since 1996. It is a local, one owner vehicle. The owner/donor suffered vision impairment soon after purchasing this vehicle and as a result it was not used for 20 years. The exterior and interior look brand new; there does not appear to be any wear to the vehicle.

With less than a week left in a no reserve auction, it will be interesting to see what this sells for. Surely not many were keeping these stored away thinking they would be future classics. Somehow I don’t think it will fetch big bucks, which is a good thing for those out there looking for cheap, efficient, German-engineered transportation.

Does extreme low mileage matter if the car is, at best, mundane? Probably to someone. This may very well be the lowest-mileage VW Fox ever. Someone donated this 1,293 mile Fox to Cars 4 Causes, and now it’s on eBay at just over $4k. They say prior to donation it hadn’t been driven in 20 years, but, impressively, it’s running and driving.

Low-mileage cars have a freshness that even the most well-cared-for old car can’t match. If someone was looking for an immaculate VW Fox, this is it. The interior and trunk are mind-boggling time capsules. The worth of this is highly subjective so I won’t wager a guess at what it will go for, but if it stayed around $5k I’d call it a steal, if only because of how weird and clean a 1k mile VW Fox is.

1972 Volkswagen K70 sedan

With regards to water cooled Volkswagens, the K70 is where it all began. This is also the first front engined, front wheel drive Volkswagen. Designed by NSU, the K70 was intended to be a smaller sibling to the revolutionary R080 rotary engined sedan. After Volkswagen assumed control of NSU, the K70 filled a niche in Volkswagen’s lineup and was marketed as a successor to the Type 4. The K70 continued on until 1973 with the introduction of the Passat. In addition to a water cooled engine, some other interesting features were inboard front brakes, rack and pinion steering and MacPherson Strut front suspension.

Here’s an excerpt from the seller’s comprehensive ad:

There are close to 500 examples in the world and only 3 in the USA. This is an exellent example of a running orginal car and the best car I have ever found. It is the ONLY running K70 in the USA. It’s my great barn find, trailer queen. I purchased it from the original owner out of New York State several years ago so this makes me the second owner. It was brought over from Belgium where it was originally purchased and converted for US import. It has a MPH speedo!

I have pored over 15 grand into this car lovingly. I didn’t skimp on anything. I would consider this car “lightly restored”. My goal was to keep it as original as possible. It has about 90% original paint and 90% original or period correct pieces.

This car represents a unique opportunity to own what could be considered the bridge between the air-coooled and water-cooled Volkswagen eras. Of, you could view this vehicle as a more reliable alternative to the NSU Ro80. In all of my travels to Germany, I have not come across a K70 in person. Even 40 years on, this car still looks rather contemporary. After years of seeing Beetles roam the German countryside, one could imagine how advanced this car must have seemed at the time.

Also, I’m not sure what everyone’s thoughts are on the car for sale itself, but the Bavarian folk music tape sold it for me.

1969 Volkswagen VW Short Bus

This sort of fits into the SUV theme week.
This bus looks like it has been languishing in a junkyard or perhaps it is an extra from the set of Lost. Some clever person decided to shorten up this bus, but it looks like they never really finished their project. I’m sure there is some non-PC joke in here somewhere about the person who thought this was a good idea and this being a “short bus”. It looks a bit of a mess. There is some interesting iron in the background of some of the photos.
The seller says it hasn’t been driven and with a wheelbase like this perhaps that is the safest thing. $3500 to give yourself a new nightmare. If you really were to take this on, why not go nuts and mid mount a BMW V12 engine.

1969 Volkswagen Squareback, 17,000 original miles

Here’s an oddball for you. An all original Volkswagen Type 3 Squareback. The Type 3 range was introduced in 1961, with the Squareback, or Variant as it was known in Europe, appearing a year later. Designed as a larger, more refined option to the perennial Beetle, this model was initially produced at the company’s Wolfsburg plant. Assembly of the Type 3 would move to the newly established Emden plant later in the production run and eventually would be superseded in 1973 by the front engined, water cooled Passat (Dasher in the U.S.). This model features the automatic transmission which was introduced in the 1968 model year. No telling from the description whether or not it features the Bosch fuel injection system, which made this vehicle one of the first volume seller’s with this setup.

The seller’s description:

Fuel injection, automatic trans, only 17,000 miles, all original paint, has a few spots where it has polished through to the primer and various small dings and scratches from the 41 years. Runs and drives like new. Interior to die for, rare red and in fantastic original condition. One in a million, everything is original and in fantastic shape. It’s like stepping back in time. This is a real collectors or museum piece.

The Squareback was the most popular of the Type 3 range, with a little over 1.2 million produced in Germany. The Notchback and Fastback had a production run of 1.3 million, split between the two models. Average retail for run of the mill examples of the Squareback are running right around the low $6,000 range, so this is a bit on the high side of that. In my opinion, if this were about $500 to $1,000 less, this car would prove to be a good value. I’ve seen restored examples go for more, but as they say, they are only original once.

1983 Volkswagen Scirocco Wolfsburg GT With Only 4700 Miles!!

I am a long time Scirocco nut. I had a ratty 77 that I beat up thoroughly in high school (class of 92). It took tons of abuse, but the willing little 4 cylinder and light weigh was a lot of fun for a kid my age to be driving back then. But my car was a heap compared to the MKII a friend’s older brother owned. It was black with black striped interior. And it was lowered on Momo rims, low profile tires (when 50 series was considered low profile!), an Alpine CD player and huge subwoofer in the back. It was one of the nicest modified cars at our school without a doubt. I even remember my Dad, who frowned on modified cars typically, remark, “That is a beautiful car. A high school kid owns it?!”

Seeing how nicely preserved this car is reminds me of that MKII from high school. The black on black is of course very familiar (though his seats were no where near as awesome as these leather ones!), but also because you just don’t see well preserved Scirocco’s anymore. Anywhere! And with only 4700 miles, this one takes the term survivor to extremes under the circumstances. These were all passed through the hands of high school kids, several times over, and each one wanted to modify it — ultimately killing most of them.

The car was purchased new in July of 1983, driven very little, and then stored for the majority of the past 26 1/2 years. The mechanic for the owner took care of and stored the car for the majority of this time up until about one year ago. The first owner had the euro headlights installed at the dealer. At some point in 1985 the GTI snowflake rims with their original set of Pirelli P6’s were put on. It also appears as if the original factory OE radio was replaced with an OE BMW factory radio out of an 83 320i. I am including an original used Heidelburg radio with the car. The orig factory 13″ rims are available with the car along with the original window sticker, factory manuals and all the OE literature on the BMW radio along with its security code & the factory OE headlights.

The car is a literal “all” orig in every way, time warp. Never hit or damaged, never repainted anywhere. The only flaw is on the right side of the hood near the windshield where something hit it and left about a one inch crack in the paint. The leather interior, headliner, and carpet are in incredible condition and still smell like a new car. No cracks or fading whatsover. The dash, door panels, headliner, every inch of rubber on the door seals are impeccable in every way.

The last Scirocco I saw in person that was this nice was Josh’s 84 that we posted here last year. That was a really fine example. This is ridiculous. And I know not everyone reading this is going to believe it, but there are 19 bids on this car totaling $8600 — and the reserve isn’t met with 2 days remaining! Clearly there are some collectors out there who remember the car as fondly as I do; not to mention an owner who isn’t letting this one go easy!

2000 Volkswagen Beetle Mona Lisa Edition

I came across this New Beetle and while I never see myself driving a new beetle let alone one with a da Vinci on the side, I thought it was kind of funny, so here it is.
The listing has more description, but I’m going to spare myself the time to write anything other than to say its a Beetle with an air brushed copy of the Mona Lisa on the side. $21,000 to start turning heads.
