Tuner Tuesday: 1995 Mercedes-Benz E320 AMG Estate

When enthusiasts of Mercedes-Benz and AMG products think the W124, one car that doesn’t readily come to mind is the E36. Right at the end of the W124 production run and beginning of the in-house AMG marriage to Daimler-Benz, a special car was produced – and amazingly, it wasn’t the 500E. The E36 received typical AMG updates like the wheels, suspension and body-kit; a recipe we’re used to. But under the hood was a 24V inline-6 that was shared with the W202 C36 AMG, good for 270-odd horsepower and it could be mated to a manual transmission. It was also available in 4 versions; sedan, coupe, convertible and – you guessed it, Estate wagon form. They’re exceedingly rare to find, and this isn’t one. But it does have some of the key details – and unlike earlier’s AMG imposter, here’s a W124 AMG replica that pulls off the look perfectly:

Condition of this Estate appears to be near perfect. The two piece AMG wheels are super-rare to see even on E36s, which seem to have come with a variety of wheels on them. However, the offset and lip are perfect for the narrow-body W124 and look just right. So does the more understated by notable body kit; lovely, understated and yet purposeful. It’s a great color combination, too – metallic Blue Black with grey leather looks awesome. And the mileage is spot on, too – leaving hundreds of thousands of miles to go. And even if it doesn’t have the screamer E36 motor, the 24V 3.2 M014 still was a pretty potent unit overall for a family car at the time. The presentation is just right, even down to where the much more tasteful photos are taken. That said, for a non-original AMG model, the asking price is sure steep. At over $20,000, the crowd interested will certainly be limited. And for U.S. fans, you’re still five years away from importing one like this. However, if nothing else this gives us hope that the W124 could be modded with AMG period details properly and come out the other side quite stunning.

Interior belies the age and 91k miles. Nice. Not $20k nice – that’s almost E55 AMG wagon money; but nice.
