1981 Porsche 930 Coupe

We feature the Porsche 930 with a fair degree of regularity here at GCFSB as it remains a long-time favorite of a few of the writers (and it’s a particular favorite of mine). Thus we naturally gravitate toward these extremely capable machines both for their prodigious performance and also their aggressively ’80s style. Yet even given the frequency with which we come across these there are still a few that make me take notice more than might be the case with most 930s. I’ve come to realize that an example in the color palette we see here will almost always be one that grabs me. Here we have a paint-to-sample Rosewood Metallic 1981 Porsche 930 Coupe, located in California, with 71,575 miles on it. Rosewood Metallic was available for the 1981 MY 911 so we may need some confirmation that it is indeed the paint-to-sample color that is indicated by the CoA, but even if Rosewood is not the correct color, this remains a visually striking Porsche in an excellent period-correct configuration.

1981 Porsche 930 turbo VIN WP0ZZZ93ZBS000486
This car is gorgeous… when you see it in the sunlight and the metallic paint pops with those factory Fuchs wheels it is really beautiful. I typically do not like BBS wheels on a turbo but even the BBS basket weaves look great on this car with the color combo.
Factory 930 turbo with less than 72,000 original miles. Motor was rebuilt from the bottom up less than 2,500 miles ago (I have the Invoice). One of the best running and driving stock turbo’s I have ever owned.
Car came from the factory as a Special order color (rosewood metallic) with Beige interior with brown and black accents. Sunroof car with optional limited slip. The car has had one bare metal respray using the factory Glasurit paint.
Both the shop that rebuilt the engine and serviced the car for close to 15 years and the shop that painted the car are on the San Francisco Peninsula and have been in business for 30 years in the same location. Very well known with excellent reputations and both available to buyers to speak with.
Paint is a strong 9.5 and interior is a 7.5 but not much work to make it perfect. Mechanically a 10, car runs and shifts beautifully.
Factory Fuchs wheels in perfect condition. Also comes with a set of pristine BBS wheels of which are shown in the last photo.
Also has factory Air conditioning but I have not put the compressor or condenser back on car. Both are boxed and in the trunk.
Certificate of Authenticity in hand verifying options and that this turbo retains its original numbers matching drive train.
CarFax is clean and picks the car up in 1985 to current. I believe I am the third owner.
Car looks to have never been in any type of accident. There is absolutely no evidence of any accidents. Floor boards are nice, clean and straight.

This car speaks for itself for anyone who drives it. The full, cases split, rebuild was completed to stock factory specifications. This is a Euro 1981 turbo. Publications I have seen, one of Jürgen Barth’s books, list the 1981 turbo as the lowest production 3.3 liter turbo. Certainly runs better than any of the US versions I have owned/driven. The 930 turbo is one of the most coveted collectable Porsches and is considered by many to be undervalued when taking into account the price of the higher production early 911’s and the 1973 RS .

Car is for sale locally and therefore I reserve the right to end the auction early as long as it has not met reserve.

As most are probably well aware, the 930 was not imported to the US market from 1980-1985, which makes this a Europe/RoW build though there is little that is unusual about that as we come across RoW 930s from this period pretty frequently. And my does this one present well. The seller has done a nice job showcasing this color within an appropriate natural environment as this shade of metallic paint works really well under sunlight along a sandy coast. Typically we like to see additional photos under more neutral lighting in order to get a complete gauge of the exterior paint condition, but there isn’t too much here to suggest we should have any concerns in that regard. The interior features a nice contrast of black, brown and beige that is typical on a 911 with this sort of exterior color. It all comes together really nicely. The seller states that the auction includes a set of BBS wheels, though the picture showing those wheels on the car appears to be absent from the ad. Regardless, if other examples I’ve come across are any indication then those BBS wheels will look fantastic here! We aren’t far from this auction’s end and with bidding at $72,600 this is coming in at a pretty nice value, assuming the car checks out mechanically. The reserve remains unmet so barring a late rise in the bidding we may see this one come up for another round.
