1979 Porsche 911SC Coupe

It feels like it’s been a while since I featured a 911 residing closer to the value end of the spectrum so I hope to remedy that with a couple posts for the end of this week. There do still exist wonderful, beautiful, and exciting alternatives that can bring joy to any motoring enthusiast. Sure, prices have risen across the board and, if we’re all honest, you’re not going to get a 911 Turbo for this sort of money – though we shouldn’t forget that the 996TT can be had for very reasonable cost – so performance by modern standards will be good but not the sort of thing to blow you away. Ultimate performance is somewhat beside the point though. Performance almost always will reside in the most modern machines enhanced by constant technological improvements. But the joy of driving, outside of a track, has never been purely about performance. It is into that arena that classic cars begin to make sense and our understanding of value begins to shift. You could find any number of new cars for a similar price as where I’d expect this 911 to sell. Some of them may even out perform this 911, most will surely provide higher levels of refinement and luxury, and many will be more reliable. But few, if any, will provide the kind of feel that connects driver to machine, the sound of the air-cooled engine clattering away behind your head, or the more ephemeral qualities that come with driving a machine with significant automotive history. An air-cooled 911 is rarely cheap, but it has value that most modern cars fail to approach.

For sale is a beautiful example of a 911 SC Euro spec model which has been owned by the same enthusiast owner for the last 30+ years. It was purchased in Germany in 1985 by this same gentleman who imported it to the US in 1985 through Autos European, Inc (documentation will be included with the car). The car has always been garage kept and meticulously maintained, both mechanically and cosmetically. This car shows and drives every bit as great as the pictures illustrate. There is no rust on this car and it was repainted in 2005. While it is not a Concours paint job, it does show quite well. With that being said, if you go over the car with a magnifying glass, you will find some minor defects, which can be expected from a 10 year old paint job. All body panels are original and the car has never been involved in any accidents. All Sekurit glass is original, with the exception of the windshield which was also replaced in 2005 due to stone chips. Performance-wise, the vehicle is bone stock with the exception of B&B headers / exhaust. This is a very clean example of the highly sought-after Euro spec 911SC which was lighter in weight, had less emissions equipment, and produced more engine torque.
Included in the sale of the car is a binder full of documentation / maintenance receipts, importation documents, the original owner’s manual, tool kit, safety kit, air pump, and un-used spare tire and jack. The car is equipped with original Fuchs wheels. Brakes have approximately 40% life up front and 80% out back. A/C was converted to R134A and blows cold. The car recently had a 30+ hour professional detail, and the oil was changed within the last 300 miles. This car is ready to go and I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it across the country as it sits.

International buyers welcome. Buyer is responsible for all transportation costs and a $1000 non-refundable deposit is required within 24 hours, with full payment due within 5 days. The car is stored in a private air conditioned garage with two lifts and pre-purchase inspections are welcome. Thanks for looking.

Getting to the car we see here, a Guards Red 1979 Porsche 911SC located in Florida with 128,282 miles on it, we see what appears to be a very well cared for and original example from near the beginning of the 911SC’s life. Given the age and mileage I think the interior looks in especially good condition. The seats are crisp, showing very little wear, with the carpets, dash and gauges all looking in good shape. All told there’s a lot to like here and assuming the mechanical condition is reflective of the care shown to the car’s appearance then there should be a ton of life left in this 911SC. These have always had near bullet-proof engines so the six-figure mileage should not deter prospective buys. Currently, bidding sits at a very reasonable $20,200, with reserve unmet, and I imagine we’ll see that climb into the mid-20s before the auction ends. Among modern options there are few coupes I can think of that would provide a better experience for the same money.

Even mid-20s would be a great value for a car like this, I think.

    Really nice SC.
I really dig that Kenwood head unit.
