A few weeks back I looked at a Japanese market 1987 M535i automatic. It was a really neat car in many ways; all original, lower miles, great condition and a good color combination – plus, it was a rare to see model. Well, today the same import company is back and upped the ante with matching 1982 and 1983 Alpina B9 3.5s. These are much more desirable than the M535i; both are manuals and these were about as close as you could get to a M5 without actually buying a M5. They’re ultra-limited production models – only around 570 B9 and later B10 models were produced. They were very close to U.S. spec M5 power numbers, with nearly 250 horsepower on tap from the Alpina-modified 3.5 engine. Coupled with upgraded suspension, brakes and bespoke interiors and exterior spoilers – and those all-important Alpina contrasting stripes – they made one heck of a package:

I left the entire descriptions in for a few reasons; first off, they’re somewhat entertaining to read. But what’s notable is that even though there are many typos and mistakes, I can’t help but think that at least they tried to fully describe the condition of the model and some of the history. That’s a lot more than we see at times from native speakers with rare cars. I love the color combination here – and wow, those seats. They’re simply incredible. I just love the look and unique rarity of the Alpina models, and the added performance over what was available at the time is notable too. You’re obviously going to pay a premium for a model like this and importation is going to be pricey – but I think in this case it might be worth the effort.

1983 BMW Alpina B9-178 3.5/1
history records
The car newly delivered to Japan 1983 from Alpina factory Germany and now 2 owner, current owner own the car more than 20 years for driving the car but since he gets old (now 70years) he left the car his lot 3-4years. so we sell the car as restration project
maintenance records
more than 20years owners friend worked at Nicol Japanese Alpina dealer as a mechanic and he mainteined the car
This car is obviously a lot worse off, but it’s also a neat color combination – the dark Agate Green with green Alpina cloth is pretty awesome. Unfortunately the condition is pretty rough, but it does all appear to be there and the car should be restored. It’s sad that it’s sat in this state for several years, but it the price remains low there should be room in the budget to fix it up. The big problem, from my perspective, is that were I going through the difficulty and expense of import a limited production car it would have to be one I wouldn’t then need to completely restore. But shows like Wheeler Dealers have proven that not only can it be done, it can be economically viable. Plus, you’ll have a story that’ll be hard to trump at your local BMW show….
