There’s always those cars that you sit back and wonder why they weren’t created in the first place. Then there are those of us who actually go ahead and build what the factory thought they should have offered. Such is the case with this 1984 Mercedes-Benz “SL36.†As most of us know, this wasn’t a thing, but when you consider it, it’s not an unreasonable creation. While the US got the breathed on 3.6 liter inline-6 from the boffins at AMG in the form of the limited production C36, the rest of the world was also treated to this powerplant in the W124 E class. The R107 never had an official hot rod version, although AMG breathed on a few of these roadsters before they became an in-house tuner. If the 3.6 liter inline-6 from the tuning arm existed when this SL was new, we may have seen a creation like this SL36 for sale in Witten, Germany. A special one-off piece! Not very well known in the SL scene! And now it’s the best SL R107 from DTL for their own use, built to sell! This is an SL36 AMG of the DTL company, only one built! The basic vehicle is a 280SL and has been serviced regularly and used only as a summer vehicle! The vehicle was approximately six years when the company DTL completed it! Therefore, a perfect MB SL 3.6 liter AMG engine was used. It was then a completely new AMG 3.6 engine with the right parts used. The axles/brakes/exhaust system and all other parts were adapted to the vehicle to achieve perfect driving dynamics! Since the build, approximately 3,000 km have been covered. The interior looks new!

Those who know me know that I’m a bit of an R107 buff. I love these SLs, not only for their stunning build quality but classic lines that combined everything I loved about cars from the seventies and eighties into one package. With a manual gearbox, the 3.6 liter engine and a subtle shade of blue, this one is almost too hard to resist for me. Good thing, then, its on the other side of the Atlantic where it’s harder to get to. R107 prices are steadily on the rise, and the condition and quality of conversion work done here should be admired. The asking price for this one makes this an improbable proposition for someone stateside, but for someone seeking a perfect cruiser for the French Riviera next summer, this SL would certainly do.

I agree with you, Paul – what an exquisite car. Where I diverge from you is on the price. Even considering the build, the condition and the mileage, there is no way, IMHO, this car is worth $90K, or roughly 5 times the price of examples in good condition that can be found stateside all day long. Yes, they won’t have this one’s AMG bits and virtually new status, but that’s a pretty optimistic premium. Are you sure you haven’t been to Colorado recently and brought home a consumable souvenir?
