A few days ago, we had an interesting comment from one of our regular readers, Aaron, with regards to the clean 1989 Mercedes-Benz 300SE. He had mentioned about considering this late eighties S-class as a replacement for his wife’s C300, which will eventually be turned in due to the lease. Have Mercedes’ gotten so bad that enthusiasts are looking to yesteryear for engineering excellence or were the Mercedes of yore just that good? Or are some people, myself included, sick and tired of fifty million electronic gadgets and gizmos in a car that can go wrong at any minute? Whatever the case may be, some of Mercedes’ best came out of the 1970s and 1980s, the W123 included. This 300D for sale in Texas represents the final year for the W123 production run, a car that carried on the tradition of safety, engineering and luxury for the Mercedes-Benz brand for a decade spanning the 1970s and 1980s.

The seller lists the color of this 300D as Astral Silver but it appears to be the non-metallic Ascot Gray. I remember seeing a late 1960s 250S in a similar shade of gray with a red MB Tex interior and the result was stunning. Still, the blue MB Tex we see here is a classy if more conservative look. The mileage on this car is about average for what we see on W123s featured on GCFSB, but those who know these cars know that they are capable of several hundred thousand miles with nary a complaint. A 1985 300D last October with 140k miles which sold for $5,500. Prices for W123s haven’t skyrocketed since then, so the asking price here is a bit on the high end for a 300D sedan, but not too far off the mark.

It always amazes me how good German cars with 100K + miles on them look.
A comparative American car of the vintage and mileage would look completely thrashed.
Some people enjoy automatic braking systems and auto steering systems. These are not Drivers. Some like seat warmers and electronic seat massagers. I prefer an analog car. My newest cars are 1994 w124 chassis cars. My 1989 944 turbo has computers, abs and dual airbags but feels about as analog as a go-cart. Things are changing. Some of us are resisting.
I’m curious to see more detailed photos of the dash. I don’t know why, but the blue is notorious for cracking. I’ve yet to see a blue dash in good condition.
@ John Campbell, for fear of sounding like someone living in the stone age, I too am one of the ones resisting. I have a 2006 MINI Cooper S which just had a recall notice issued re: the airbag sensor in the passenger seat. One of the sensors went bad and now the light comes on sporadically in the dash. I told the dealer you can just disconnect the light for all I care, and take the airbags out of the dash if you want. Just let me live my life.
