After setting eyes on this low mileage 1985 Mercedes-Benz 300D for sale in New Jersey, I thought to myself “this car embodies everything I used to love about Mercedes.” If you asked me right now to sound off the current lineup, I’d struggle to name every model and trim variation, such is the expanse of the product portfolio and my general indifference towards SUVs from any manufacturer. The W123’s life came to a close when there was a fairly simple lineup, although one which expanded with the introduction of the W201 190 class. Few thought the W123, with its larger than life reputation, could be successfully superseded, but the W124 E-class did an admirable job of building an image all its own. Still, however, the W123 is revered amongst the Mercedes faithful with many original and restored examples roaming the streets today. If you’re looking for the best of the best, though, this example pretty much takes the cake.

Honestly, after setting eyes on this 300D, beige (or Smoke Silver in this case) never looked so good. These cars were the epitome of elegant restraint, with just enough chrome and adornment and styling that has aged gracefully over the years. Mercedes Motoring in California has been a champion of the W123 and currently has a 1984 300D with 114k miles on offer for $28,500. This is certainly an outlier in the current market but they do a great job of finding clean, original examples with excellent history and restore them sympathetically. Given where bidding is already sitting, I wouldn’t be surprised if this 300D reaches well into the $30,000 range.

What a great example of a W123 Sedan. Truly a museum piece. I’d love to see pictures of a (hopefully) sealed First Aid Kit. However, my only concern is the rubber on this car. Period correct Conti’s are great – but unsafe and not practical. I ran them briefly – but traded them for a mint Becker 612 as I didn’t want to experience a blowout (Even though they showed no signs of dry-rot having been in dry storage at a dealer in original plastic at ~20 psi for 30+ yrs.) at any speed. LCA bushings look tired too – maybe just my opinion. Low Mileage W123’s seem to be popping up all over the place. IIRC Gullwing MC has one for sale with even lower mileage. GLWS, I hope the car comes with boxes of blue ‘booties’ for future passengers shoes.
Dean just sold me a smoke silver 300se and I couldn’t be happier. Great guy who sells top notch cars. His garage is something to behold if you’re into the vintage Benz thing. He does limited resto in many cases to recondition worn parts. I liked dealing with him so much I asked him to sell my 944 Silver Rose. I hope I do business with him again some time.
Wow…relisted with a BIN price of $46K. “Optimistic” just doesn’t seem adequate to describe that number. I believe the prior auctions have topped out at less than $30K. The market has spoken, but it appears that the seller wasn’t listening.
