1985 Volkswagen Scirocco 16V – REVISIT

The 1985 Volkswagen Scirocco from last fall with a 2.0 16 valve conversion and some nice touches like BBS wheels, Euro bumpers and Euro headlights is back up on Ebay with a 10% price drop to just below $5,000. I think its great looking in the rare to see shade of Titian Red Metallic on these Sciroccos and the upgrades are just what I’d want – for the money, it seems like a pretty hard to beat value performance package.

The last few months has seen some crazy expensive A1 Volkswagens, so it’s refreshing to see a neat driver that is in the stratosphere. Today’s example started life as a plain-jane 8V 1.8 Scirocco in Titian Red Metallic, and probably would be higher valued if it had remained that way; but for me, I like what the owner has done with this car. Gone are the diving board bumpers and quad-sealed beams, replaced by the more desirable and slicker-looking European units. Also gone is the slightly anemic 1.8 8V, replaced by a Techtonics Tuning 2.0 16V. Round it out with a fresh set of BBSs, and this is a slick package for sure:

1985 8v Scirocco with Techtonics 2.0 16v engine installed in mid-90s. Three-owner car. We’ve babied and cherished it since June 1990.
–Complete maintenance records since 1990
–New tires (see photos): Yokohama S-drive 195/50R-15
–BBS 15-inch wheels
–Euro bumpers and headlights
–16v body kit, with EXTRA body kit
–Techtonics exhaust
–Bilstein shocks with Neuspeed lowering springs

A few dings and scratches (see photos). Paint is in beautiful shape. Small burn on backseat from previous owner (see photo). (We are not smokers and car does NOT smell like smoke.) Cloth interior of the sunroof has some staining from inside sunroof (see photo). Everything works.

It’s still a blast to drive, and we’re sad to see her go, but need to downsize our car collection.

On Sep-25-13 at 12:36:10 PDT, seller added the following information:

Addition on 9.25, based on query from potential buyer: There is no rust. Hasn’t been driven in winter, and it’s been garaged most of its life. The clutch was replaced when we dropped in the 2.0L engine, in the mid-90s. It did not need replacing, but we figured we might as well replace it with the engine out. The transmission is original and unopened. We have not even replaced the original shift bushings, no need to.

If you like mid-80s VW products, it doesn’t get much better than a Scirocco set up like this. Titan Red Metallic might not be everyone’s favorite, but in this guise the car looks like a 7/8th scale Quattro, and that’s not a bad thing at all. Thankfully, it’s not 7/8ths the complexity or price of a 1985 Quattro, and in it’s current form it’s likely quicker in everything but the snow. With maintenance records since 1990, a solid build, desirable Euro pieces and a great motor choice, this is a great package in my opinion. Better yet, it’s affordable as a driver – $5,500 seems like a steal for all this door-wedge goodness. Buy it now and enjoy trips up the tach for years to come, and I doubt it will lose any value if properly maintained!
