1987 Porsche 930 – REVISIT

The very beautiful low-mileage Cassis Red 1987 Porsche 930 we featured back in August is back up for another sale. They have lopped $10K off of the asking price, now at $99,888.00, and while that still isn’t very cheap it’s starting to look like a much more attractive value for what is surely a pretty rare color on the 930. Will it finally sell?

The below post originally appeared on our site August 22, 2014:

One of the drawbacks of writing about cars for sale is that generally our only actual experience of that particular car is through the pictures and ads we peruse. There are exceptions, but that’s the basic nature of it. That means when we come across particularly interesting examples it naturally creates a strong desire to see more and to really spend time taking in all of the details in a way that any number of pictures could never achieve. Such is the case with this car, a Cassis Red 1987 Porsche 930, located in New Jersey, with Burgundy leather interior and only 20,342 miles. Every shift of the lighting and every movement of the body changes the color of this car just slightly and when that shade is applied to a design that is as aggressive as the 930 it leads to a renewed appreciation for what has always been a fantastic car. I go back and forth on whether I think this color works well with the ethos of the 930 itself, but even so it’s a pleasure to take in.

Cassis Red is a color we rarely come across on a 911 in general and this is the first time I recall seeing it on a 930. Because it’s a soft color it doesn’t possess the menace of a black 930 nor the brash of Guards Red. In fact, the subtlety of the color is in sharp contrast to the overall nature of the car, which makes for an interesting juxtaposition between hard and soft. Taken together with the beautiful burgundy interior you have a very special color combination that is sure to be one of the few anyone ever comes across. The color along with the very low mileage should make this 930 a very interesting proposition for collectors, and while the price here is high it should stand an excellent chance of exceeding that value down the road.

I love the mashup of “Top Gear” in the name with a logo clearly inspired by the show “5th Gear.” They should just say “where Tiff & Richard Hammond come to buy.”

Anyway – when I googled this color, all the photos looked more pink/red and less brown, except for the ones of this vehicle. Maybe they’re doing some post-processing on the photos, it’s not dramatic but they do look a bit different.

If it had a linen or dove gray interior it would be just about perfect.

Ry, do you think it could be a repaint?

@Justin – I kind of lean towards some photoshop post processing, but it’s hard to know for sure. I agree with you on the interior though.

I googled “top gear imports LLC” and there were more than the average # of complaints (on all sorts of websites), and a federal RICO lawsuit filed against them 2 weeks ago! I couldn’t see the text of the filing, just that it had been filed.

    Wow. That’s pretty disturbing.

I guess if you’re willing to “borrow” from two trademarks to make your own logo (look at the “TopGear,” same capitalization, spacing, and italics as the show name!), it doesn’t set the best standard for your credibility and business practices.

I looked into this place for maybe a half hour and have never read so much shady stuff about its owners, their pasts, the ads they place, the cars they sell, etc. Upset people outnumber happy clients by about 20:1 from what I’ve seen.

And if you’re reading this, and dismissing my comments – this is some of the worst I’ve seen and I’m a prolific commenter on here, a site that discusses used enthusiast cars for sale! So it’s not like they’re the first people I’ve ever given any scrutiny. But if anyone is curious just do some intensive Googling yourself.

There’s room for a lot of heartbreak (and worse) when one consigns his treasured car to one of these outfits….unaccounted-for wire transfers, misplaced titles, liens placed by creditors no one ever heard of…choose your consignees carefully!

My 88 Targa is the same color combo.. Cassis / Burgundy. I love it, it looks different in different lighting. In the sun it does have a pink hue to it, when its dark it looks more brown sort of like the Porsche Rosewood color.

Ive spoken with that shop a few times, they claim they’re more of a wholesaler looking to sell to dealers. Its a bit sketchy.

As for the car it looks fantastic, the front spoiler is either a real RUF piece or a knock off.
