1988 Porsche 944 Turbo

It may sound strange, but this is – I believe – the first non-S, non-Cup 1988 944 Turbo we’ve written up on this blog. While that may not sound outrageous, the 944 Turbo is a staple of these pages and considering the thousands of cars we’ve written up – virtually with every production year covered – it’s a bit strange to me. But as with 1987, 1988 was a year of change for the 944 Turbo; while the standard model carried over the ABS and airbag changes from the previous model, there were no major changes (the DME chip was changed from 24 to 28 pin; that’s about it). However, the big change was the half year introduction of the “S” model; standard M030 suspension and upgraded power were the highlights. While the power increase wasn’t huge at only 30, the limited run status, additional power, cool Silver Rose colors and upgraded suspension mean that it’s the model that we often concentrate on. Of course, that means we overlook the standard Turbo, and that’s a shame – because like the ’86 and ’87 cars, they were still great performance values and offered significant forced induction street credentials. It was, after all, a Porsche Turbo you were cruising in; select Guards Red from the color pallet and you’d have completed the Yuppie dream coupe recipe:

This Porsche 944 just underwent a high quality repaint in its original factory color of Guards Red. The car was fully disassembled, painted right and put back together. Not a tape and spray job, but a seamless repaint better than factory finish. The job was finished by a high end full wetsand and buff to a mirror finish. The body on the car is laser straight, and does not have even a single door ding, scratch, or rock chip! The body and paint on this car look like a 25 year old band new car! All of the moldings and trim look excellent and the car retains all of its original Sekurit glass .

The car is riding on rare Porsche 17″ Staggered 993 Sport wheels taken from a 1996 Carrera with brand new Crested centercaps. They are all in great original condition and are wrapped in Hankook Ventus Evo Z-Rated performance tires. This setup really modernizes the look of this Turbo.

The beautiful interior is in excellent condition. The seats are in good condition with zero ware of any kind. Everything works in the car…lights, gauges, radio, seats, windows, locks, a/c blows ice cold, etc. The dash is perfect and even the original floor mats are still in place. The original factory Blaupunkt stereo sounds great for nearly 30 years old!

Mechanically, this Porsche is in great condition and runs and drives great. Prior to paint, every drive train related aspect has either been gone through or replaced. It has very healthy and very quick. This car boasts 217bhp and flys 0-60 in 6.8 sec with a top speed of 150mph! The car has a very strong 5-Speed transmission that shifts perfect. The car has just been serviced at an authorized Porsche service center with Mobil 1 and was given a clean bill of health. The car has always been maintained at Porsche authorized service centers, and had both its 15k and 30k service completed. This car is very clean under the hood and really shows how its previous owner took excellent care of it. The A/C blows ice cold and the heat works as it should. Recent receipts show a head gasket job completed, new water pump and timing belt, new front struts, new lower ball joints, and all fresh fluids.

This car is ready to go! The exterior of this Coupe is stunning in Red with Black sport interior and is definitely the most desired color combination for the 944. The factory turbo set up this car boasts makes it a blast to drive! This car is an excellent value and is a lot of car for the money, and with these low miles…you can’t go wrong!

Good luck in the auction!

The biggest change to this low mile 944 was the wheels, upgraded to 993 Cup wheels which do, as the seller suggests, slightly modernize the look. They’re good looking wheels and aren’t too out of character, though truth told I’d still opt for the 16″ forged Clubsport wheels from the S model first. Otherwise, there really isn’t much to nitpick here; if you don’t want a S or a 1989 model, this is one really great example. It was optioned with the limited slip but not the M030; long term, that may slightly alter how collectable it is, but not much and as an occasional driver/show car it won’t have much affect at all. As we’ve talked about many times, these cars represent a great value relative to some of their competition; notably, the asking price is far below what a similar condition, same year Quattro or M3 would be. But if you want a classic Porsche turbo from the 1980s, increasingly the 944 Turbo is the only realistic opportunity for most people to experience the great build quality and superlative driving experience of the Zuffenhausen marque on a reasonable budget.
