1991 Mercedes-Benz 420SEL

Fresh off the 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL from a few weeks ago, luck would have it that another nice W126 comes up in a less than common color of Pearl Blue Metallic. This one is in V8 guise with the 4.2-liter of the aptly named 420SEL. Much like the 300SEL, it is a whole lot of everything you need and really nothing you don’t. One of the things that bugged me about the W126 is that heated seats was only offered on the top of the range 560SEL, but seems a little petty for Mercedes to do considering what the S-Class was at the time, but I guess that was the reality of fancy options in the late 1980s. This example from California checks in with a fair 142,000 miles, so not exactly a low mileage example that will burn a bunch of value if you drive it. What’s not to like?

Beautiful West Coast W126 420 SEL Sedan. Owned by a mature and discriminating enthusiast who had a penchant for quality German luxury vehicles. Currently showing 142,000 pampered miles, it has been religiously maintained and sat covered in a garage when not in use. The 4.2 L SOHC 16-valve, V-8 (201 HP/228 lb/ft.torque) pulls incredibly smoothly and effortlessly, characteristic of these engines…this sedan comports itself only the way a Mercedes-Benz W126 can. Becker head unit includes optional trunk mounted CD changer and Gullideckel factory wheels are wrapped in all season Michelin tires. Supple gray interior was recently conditioned and the dash is crack free! The vehicle just underwent a major service by a MBZ master technician with factory parts. No expense was spared on this car and all parts are OEM unless otherwise specified. A vehicle of such provenance is very difficult to come by, let alone in this condition. I really like this one. I think the color combo is delightful with the dark blue lower along with the grey leather interior. Under the hood looks nearly spotless, and the seller is claiming a fair amount of service has been carried out. This would be an ideal grand tourer sedan if wanted or even a special occasion car if you wanted to go that way as well. Being a California car has saved this one for sure, because I don’t think this one looks as nice as it does if it was exposed to the elements over all these years.

The seller has this one started out at $7,500 and no reserve from there. I think around $10,000 would be fair given the mileage, but anything north of that might be overpaying and heading towards 560SEL money. If you were to get it well under the $10,000, I think it is a no brainer for me. Hope to see more of these come out of the wood work.

  1. That blue on grey is a very nice color combo. As much of a fan as I am of colored interiors, I really don’t care for the typical blue on blue that they used to do. This is much better.

  2. Being a big fan of W126s I really like this car. Perlblau is a beautiful exterior color, but hospital-grey inside spoils it for me completely. If it were only blue or black inside………………
