Another rare, low-mileage, 964 and another very high price. This time, however, we have an auction in which the reserve has been met so we should be able to get a reasonable idea of the current market. After the 964 Speedster, Porsche fans would have to wait nearly two decades for another Speedster variant to appear and as the last of the air-cooled models the 964 is sure to remain a hit. Also, while none of the 911 Speedsters have been as stripped down as the original iteration of the 356, the 964 Speedster may be the closest of the bunch. Based on the narrow-bodied Carrera 2, the lines of this Speedster show a familiar resemblance to the original and remind us of some of Porsche’s earliest low-frills performance machines. The particular example featured here comes from a collection of Speedsters: a triple Black 1994 Porsche 911 Speedster, located in Arizona, with just 10,456 miles on it.

I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve come across (or written about) a basic black on black Speedster. Nothing fancy or showy, just a rich black exterior with a subdued black interior. While I always appreciate the wide variety of interior options offered by Porsche it is nice, at times, to come back to something basic. Of course, with the car here that basic tint surrounds and engulfs a pretty special machine nearly masking the brilliance of the car itself. And that’s just fine. Other than a few creases in each seat this car shows very little wear and sits as a time capsule back to its inception. Even if never as pure as the original 356 Speedster, these still arrived as a lower frills option to the standard Carrera 2 and surely will command exceptional long-term value.

I’ve never been excited about Speedster variations of the 911 – they just don’t look right. I can appreciate the rarity, and the values they command, but those same attributes make it “undriveable” – god forbid it gets in an accident or anything like that. I’ll leave these for the uber-rich to look at, there are many other great 911’s that can be had for 1/5th to 1/10th of the price. I just can’t really say “wow” aside from how much they are worth. A standard cabriolet looks much more stunning, top up and down….. A turbo Cab 930 is just gorgeous…
