1995 Audi A6 2.8 quattro 5-speed – REVISIT

The 1995 Audi A6 we featured back in March is back up on offer, at a well reduced price. It’s rare enough to find a clean C4 A6 2.8 in good condition with low mileage, but equipped with a 5-speed manual as we see here, it makes for quite the rare piece.

The below post originally appeared on our site March 18, 2015:

On the surface, the C4 Audi 100/A6 quattro wasn’t a very exciting car. Compared to the turbocharged inline-5s that the V6 cars replaced, they seemed a little vanilla and uninspiring. Sure, on paper the V6 put out more power with more instant response than the venerable turbo units, but as an enthusiast it just felt like Audi gave up. Over the run of the non-turbo C4, Audi changed several items; the nomenclature changed from the longstanding “100” to the new “A6″ nameplate in 1995. That change, as with the similar S6, accompanied new bumper covers, projector beam headlights, revised badge language and new 16” wheels. The changes were subtle versus the earlier 100, but all in all the changes made the A6 feel more upscale and polished than the 100 had been. The motor and drivetrain didn’t change though, with virtually all of the non-S C4s being sold in automatic and quattro form. The A6 seemed to be the workhorse of a subset of luxury buyers who had left Mercedes-Benz and just wanted the confidence of all-wheel drive without the inconvenience of having to move your right arm and left leg often. Every once in a while, though, someone specified a 5-speed transmission, and it’s worth sitting up and taking note – especially when it’s improbably low miles and near perfect condition:

I’m sure for a fair amount of enthusiasts even within Camp quattro, the major disappointment is that this car isn’t an S6. And fair enough there – if I had the option to choose between the two, I’d prefer the turbocharged mill as well. The V6, though, is a reasonable motor which is long-lived. It certainly won’t shock you with power, but coupled with the manual it’s a smooth operator that is capable on the highway. The color here is Cashmere Grey Pearl which is really lovely and more uncommon than the typical greens, blues and pearl whites that A6s were often specified in. The interior looks to be near new and in line with the lower miles; again, it’s perhaps disappointing that it’s not the heavily bolstered seats in the S6 but the no-nonsense A6 still looks pleasant. Coupled with the lower miles, this is a luxurious, classic German car with effectively the same platform as the S4/S6 and the long-lived and cheap to maintain V6 under the hood. Is it a $10,000 example? If you want some classic style coupled with a more relaxed pace, this is a car that could last you easily a decade or more with minimal repairs. It’s also a ultra-rare package to find and even more so in this combination. This is likely the best condition, lowest mileage A6 quattro you’re likely to find in the U.S. and in the most desirable non-S configuration. To me, it may not be the most exciting package Audi ever produced, but this is a unique opportunity to own a legendary package.

I have never driven the 2.8 with a manual transmission. The automatic was completely boring in my experience. I wonder if this might be a more engaging car? I would think this might make a really good workhorse, or a good car for a young driver.

Really lovely, especially the design and execution of the interior. Days gone by when unfeminine loveliness was a paradigm as opposed to roid rage.

    Early8q,

I’ve driven the near identical 100CS quattro 5-speed. Not quick, mind you, but a competent car. It’s hard to remember that the 5000CS Quattro also wasn’t really very fast. Minus the little turbo rush, the speed is about the same. The 5000CSQ recorded about 8.3 second 0-60, 16.4 1/4 mile. The A6 5-speed was effectively the same.

I owned a 2.8 90cs Quattro manual, much like the turbo variants it was fairly anemic unless is was on the highway, where it felt surprisingly strong.
