1996 Volkswagen GTI VR6

6/6/2017 Updated with a new listing from a new seller – click HERE!

The Mk.3 Volkswagen GTI is in a pretty tough spot right now. For many, they’re too new to consider a classic in the making. But let’s take a breath on this one right now – the first VR6 powered GTIs can legally be registered as a vintage car in some states. Now that your mind is blown, move on to the next step – when was the last time you saw a really nice, clean and original VR6? Right, what was it – 2002? Sure, the Mk.3 didn’t have the best interior quality or the best build quality. But then, neither did the Mk.1 or Mk.2, and the GTI versions of those are firmly into collector status. The third generation may suffer from not being a Corrado and looking a little less special overall than the first two, but the addition of the VR6 into the chassis made for one thrilling driving experience. This might be the perfect time, then, to snap up a nice VR6 and get ready to rock some antique

“ONE OF THE FASTEST AND MOST RELIABLE CARS OF THE 90’s”

I am selling my 1996 Volkswagen GTI VR6. Most likely the nicest example out there. Has always been a Southern California car.

Its a real surviver with the original 91K mile, original paint, original engine and hard to get these days. This car has always been taken care of and serviced and would be a great candidate for a collector.

There are absolutely no mods and has never been never chipped/turboed. The only thing I have added to the car is the magnaflow catback exhaust which brings out the amazing sounds of the VR6. Everything else is in original condition. It has always been owned by an adult and never been raced or modded. Windshield has a small crack.

Absolutely no rust. Some natural small dings and scrapes due to it being 20 years old.

Some of the highlights are:

– 4x brand new Nitto sport tires all around
– original roof rack which is made for the Golf MK3 (with lock and key)
– Magnaflow catback (2.25 inch pipe)
– over $2K spent to make sure all maintenance is up to date including cables, coil, spark plugs, o-rings, fresh oil change, filter and much more.

Clean title in hand. Welcome to come and inspect the vehicle.

2x original keys and owner’s manual included.

Please let me know if you have any additional, questions or would like to see any specifics pictures.

The vehicle is located in Cypress, CA 90630. Selling to USA buyers only! No international shipping. Buyer is responsible for shipping but I will be more than happy to meet with a car carrier, etc. if needed to hand over the car and keys. Title will be sent to the new owner via FedEx. Personalized plate is not included in the sale

Thank you and happy bidding!

This is exactly the car you’d want. The miles are in check, the condition is predominantly original, and it even comes with some OEM+ options. I think the later Speedline wheels featured on the Driver’s Edition and ’98 models were better looking rolling stock, but the Pininfarina BBS Design wheels are correct and look in good shape. The leather seems to be nice, too, as does the LN5Y Windsor Blue Metallic paint. Might there be a nicer GTI out there? Surely, it would not surprise me, as each generation has models that come out of the woodwork as prices increase. But on the market right now there is not a better specimen, and the pricing will probably reflect that. Active bidding so far has hit only $5,000 and not broken the reserve. Considering a Mk.1 in this condition could push four times that figure and a Mk.2 easily double that amount, these represent the next logical step in the collection chain while simultaneously being a better driving car than either of the first two generations. Just find a good one and enjoy!
