1999 Audi A8 4.2 quattro

While low mileage, pristine condition Porsches almost seem cliche, finding an Audi with not much distance covered just doesn’t happen very often. When it does, it seems to inevitably be a model that no one is particularly excited about. That’s unfortunate, because often those models are quite competent performers, indeed. Growing off of the Audi Space Frame Concept from 1993, the A8 was the replacement for the short lived V8 quattro. Although the V8 had only been in production for a few years when the ASF was built, the Type 44 chassis was already quite old so a replacement was fitting. And Audi really outdid itself, with a modern, clean design based around lightweight aluminum technology. Underneath, the initial A8 didn’t offer revolution but instead built on the technology incorporated into the advanced for the time V8 quattro. Over its life, though, the A8 became a world-class leading sedan with steadily increasing technology and power output. For the most part, though, what most people remember are the post 2001 changes; introduction for the U.S. market of the long-wheel base A8L and sporty S8. That’s unfair to the often unloved and seldom seen early models which were very similar and quite competent in their own right. Running across a 1999 A8 is rare enough, but one in good condition? It’s fair to say that this is something you don’t see often:

Coming in hot on the back of the 2001 Audi A4, here’s another great condition, lower mile, automatic, and relatively undesirable Audi. I’m a huge fan of the huge Audi, and this is the type of car which is so lovely to see, but I’m just not sure that it’s the one that I’d buy. All things considered there’s a pretty, understated quality to the pre-facelift A8. It looks closer to the original ASF design and is really devoid of fuss. Under the hood you’ve got a timing belt V8 that’s nearly bomb proof as long as you keep on top of leaks and…well, the belt, but the same can’t be said for the 5-speed Tiptronic. You should start by assuming the transmission will fail immediately and be pleasantly surprised by every mile that you’re able to complete. That probably sounds like fear-mongering, but hey – this was a complicated design, and it’s now old enough to legally drink alcohol in the U.S.. Generally that’s not a good combination.

Truth told, I love the color combination of Cashmere over Ecru, I love the polished wheels, it’s really nice to see a pre-faclift A8, and it’s in great shape with lower miles. If I had a $7,500 cashier’s check burning a whole in my pocket and had to have a late-90s Audi and didn’t mind an automatic and limited my search to cars that have appeared on this site recently, I’d choose this car over the A4 I just wrote up and have money left for repairs. But that’s a pretty specific set of criteria, don’t you think?

    A pre-facelift A8 like this one is the loaner at my shop, and even with the smaller 3.7 V8 it’s plenty zippy, and the interior is just plain heavenly. Lots of throwback look and feel with some nice advances like switchblade sidewinder key and trip computer thrown in. The interface on the Concert 1 radio drives me fairly nuts but it sounds great. On the exterior I love the amber side markers. I just went thru all the auction photos and was puzzled by an exterior shot of the sunroof. Is this the solar-cell warm-weather-package thing that cools the car when it’s parked? Was that avail in ‘99? I’m used to seeing those on the later D2 S8 but not these older beauties.

    I love this color too and also think I prefer the exterior look of the pre-facelift. And yes solar sunroof at least as early as 1997.
    Warm Weather package: Solar sunroof (operates fresh air fans when vehicle is parked in sun), Electric sunshade for rear window and manual sunshades for rear side windows, break resistant insulated glass.

    One last question: is this a 40-valve V8 like the D2 S8 had?

    @John – All pre-facelift A8s had 32V motors, including the Euro S8.

    I bought a 99 A8 found here a few years back. 49k on it, beautiful condition. Paid 7200, and had it shipped to me. Wonderful car, great on the highway. Interior is understated and solid. Sure you have to remove the front of the car to replace the thermostat. Drove it for about 3 years nearly every day. Put nearly 30k on it, then the transmission went. Sadly no one in STL could or would touch it, it wasn’t worth shipping it or the cost of removing the trans and shipping so it was junked. I could have leased a nice honda accord for what it cost me to drive this so good trade in my book.
