If it weren’t for its big splash in the movie Ronin, I tend to think that the first generation Audi A8 might be relegated to the dustbin of automotive history. This is quite a shame, because along with being the first Audi with an aluminum space frame, this über saloon also debuted the W12 engine. Don’t remember the A8 6.0 W12? Well, if you were a consumer in North America, this isn’t surprising, as these uncommon, twelve cylinder D2s were produced with Europe and Japan in mind. Age Defying Beauty: 1995 Audi S6 Avant

It’s always with a bit of sadness that one of your friends posts a long love affair for sale. It’s understandable; people change priorities or move on, but when you know the amount of time and effort that has gone into a car you can’t help but hope that the next owner will appreciate even a small percentage of what it took. I’ve known Scott from Coventry Motor Car for nearly 20 years; writing that, it’s hard for me to believe or quantify. I still remember driving into a the parking lot of Mystic Aquarium to meet the stranger who had posted some Audi 90 Sport quattro wheels for sale – there in the lot was a gorgeous pearl white 90. That car, and a few others that Scott has owned along the way, have passed on, and his current project is now on the block. I must say, whatever the car that he has been working on through the years, the presentation has always been top notch – and it’s easy to see the attention to detail looking through the photos of this stunning Avant. Proving age is just a number, Scott’s work restoring this Avant to pristine shape has resulted in one of the best all around examples we’ve seen for sale in recent memory:

1999 Audi A8 with 50,000 Miles

While low mileage, pristine condition Porsches almost seem cliche, finding an Audi with not much distance covered just doesn’t happen very often. When it does, it seems to inevitably be a model that no one is particularly excited about. That’s unfortunate, because often those models are quite competent performers, indeed. Growing off of the Audi Space Frame Concept from 1993, the A8 was the replacement for the short lived V8 quattro. Although the V8 had only been in production for a few years when the ASF was built, the Type 44 chassis was already quite old so a replacement was fitting. And Audi really outdid itself, with a modern, clean design based around lightweight aluminum technology. Underneath, the initial A8 didn’t offer revolution but instead built on the technology incorporated into the advanced for the time V8 quattro. Over its life, though, the A8 became a world-class leading sedan with steadily increasing technology and power output. For the most part, though, what most people remember are the post 2001 changes; introduction for the U.S. market of the long-wheel base A8L and sporty S8. That’s unfair to the often unloved and seldom seen early models which were very similar and quite competent in their own right. Running across a 1999 A8 with only 50,000 miles is rare enough that you might not see it again in the U.S. and offers you the opportunity to get into a nearly new top flight executive sedan:

1998 Audi A8 4.2 Quattro

I’ll make no excuses for my love of the Audi D2. Sure, it helps that I owned a D11 V8 Quattro, but the reality is that the D2 was, at least in my opinion, a better looking car than its competition from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. It was clear when the original “Aluminum Space Frame” (ASF) concept launched in 1993 that Audi had jumped the game up. No longer would they rely on a restyled mid-size car for their top of the range executive sedan; the A8 represented an entirely new direction for the company, with revised design language that would last two generations as well as substantially altered technology. That technology made the A8 much lighter than it looked; through use of aluminum, the curb weight of the large A8 was about the same – despite increased levels of luxury, legroom and soundproofing – as the outgoing V8 quattro. Sure, at around 4,000 lbs, it’s no featherlight; but it wore its weight well and elegantly, making it seem like a much sportier and livelier car than the numbers alone would suggest. Then there was the presence that the A8 just oozes; much like the beloved BMW E38, the D2 manages to look long, low and aggressive while still seeming elegant and refined. It’s a combination few large sedans are able to pull off, and from a looks perspective, it’s hard to argue that either of the successive generations of large Audi have surpassed the good looks of the D2.

From a buyers perspective, these cars are also the bargain of the “Big Three” German executives. Generally it’s hard to find a late 1990s A8 in very good condition, but when you do it’s a bit of a treat because they’re generally on offer for about the same money that gets you into a decent A4. If you’re looking for refinement, there’s simply no contest between the two; the A8 wins hands down any day. Coupled with all wheel drive and the quite capable 310 horsepower 40V V8, they’re no slouch on back roads or highways, either. 2008 Audi A8

After spotting the V8 Quattro last week, I got on a crazy large sedan kick, and it’s still going. As I’ve been browsing the internet looking for great luxury sedans, a few things are becoming more and more apparent. First, BMW is going off the reservation with 7 series styling. They are one of the most polarizing cars out there, and I’m not sure how I feel. Second, these flagship sedans depreciate like CRAZY, making them some of the best bargains out there. Lastly, the Audi A8, is by far my favorite.

This silver over black A8 for sale in Framingham, MA is a great example of Audi luxury, at a reasonable price.

This is a great example of a well kept relatively low mileage luxury sedan in one of the best color combinations for a German car. The styling of the later D3 A8, is by far my favorite, It’s the beginning of the “waterfall” grill, but it’s still the generation before they went overboard with it. As someone that is in the market for a new-to-me car, this is certainly one that I would put on my short list. With an asking price of $37,995, it’s priced right about where it should be, and any good negotiator could probably go home with it for around $35K out the door.

1998 Audi A8

Big Audis have always been the dark horse of the large German sedan clan. Audi first sold this all aluminum sedan in 1997 as a replacement for the Audi V8, sales of which ceased in the US in 1994. Not many people took notice as the big Audi bowed out of the market, but the A8 made a splash at the time as a very advanced and capable luxury cruiser.

The seller states:

Up for sale is my 1998 Audi A8. I’ve owned this car for about 5 years or so. It has extremely low mileage for the year and I’ve always kept it in excellent condition. My wife and I are downsizing a bit, which is the reason for the sale. We have 2 other vehicles and don’t need a 3rd in this economic climate. I’ve tried to include pictures of every possible square inch of the car so you get a good idea of what you’re purchasing.

As far as the exterior goes, the paint is good. It does have a few light scratches here and there and some rock chips on the front of the car. Nothing out of the ordinary for a 12 year old car. It has 3 nearly brand new tires and 1 tire that will need to be replaced soon. 3 out of 4 of the wheels are in great shape. 1 of the wheels, as seen in the pictures, has what appears to be some oxidation. On the front left part of the bumper, one of the clips is broken. You can see it in one of the pictures. It doesn’t affect anything, but a small part of the bumper is detached from the car just in front of the front left wheel. I would imagine it’s an easy fix as it just needs a new clip.

The interior is really in top notch shape. The leather is still soft and in truly superb condition given the age of it. There are some lines in the front seats, but that’s it. No cracks, just normal wear from sitting. The rear seats are in like new condition. Everything works inside. All the power goodies. The sunroof works beautifully, power seats, windows, etc. All 4 seats are heated and they all work great. The center console has a tape deck and there is also a factory CD changer in the trunk which is obviously operated up front. It’s never been smoked in. All the wood grain is in perfect condition. Headliner is perfect.

Mechanically it’s great. The car runs strong, very powerful. It’s been my daily driver around town and we’ve taken it on a few day trips around Maine and New Hampshire. Very comfortable ride. Gas mileage is so-so. It’s decent on the highway, usually getting around 20-25 mpg. City driving is more in the 15 mpg range.

This particular A8 could use a bit of TLC, as there is a scratch here, a scratch there, and a few of the wheels are scuffed and/or missing center caps. Nothing a little bit of money wouldn’t fix. For much less than $10k, this all aluminum wonder could prove to be a useful all weather companion.

1990 Audi V8 Quattro for Sale

A very low-mileage Audi V8 Quattro is up on eBay with 20 days left at a Buy-It-Now or Best Offer price of $6500.  This was the predecessor to the A8, offering a 3.6L 247hp V8.  Weak by today’s standards, but not too shabby in 1990.  It was also the only full-size sedan with AWD at time and came with a galvanized body, so rust shouldn’t be a problem.

I think the big selling point here is the extremely low 41k miles.   It’s no Ur-S4 or S6, but $6500 for a fun, big AWD sedan is not too bad at all.
