Theme Week: 2007 Audi RS4 Sedan

In celebration of Audi week here at GCFSB, here is the car that brought the RS4 badge stateside.  The “RS” initials are taken from the German term RennSport, which is literally translated as “racing sport”, and these cars lived up to that name in grand fashion.  Used as showcases for Audi’s latest technologies, the RS cars are the things that Audi enthusiasts lust after the world over.

In 2007,  Audi released the RS4 Sedan to the US market.  This was the first time an RS4 was offered as a sedan, rather than the Avant.  At first glance there are few differences between the RS4, and an S4, but the differences are many.  Mechanically, the RS4 is fitted with the same 420hp 4.2L V8 used in the R8, vs. the 340hp version found in the S4.  But the differences don’t end there, the RS4 also featured Audi’s Dynamic Ride Control for improved handling, lightweight magnesioum control arms, and an almost 2″ wider track.  In the styling department, the RS4 also featured aluminum front body panels to improve weight distribution, wider arches front and rear to accomodate the wider track, and larger side vents used to cool the additional radiators.

This Mugello Blue over black (ad says Sprint Blue, but that is incorrect) for sale in Carrollton, Texas is an example of an well looked after daily driver.

These have to be one of my favorite Audis of recent years, however I do wish they had offered the Avant in the states.  The Mugello Blue is one of my favorite Audi colors, as it’s a refreshing change from the Black, Silver, or Grey RS4s that you more commonly see.  The price of $39,900 on this car is about $2,000 below retail, and that is certainly appropriate considering there are a few issues with the car that need to be addressed. With the missing manual, and the fact that it will need tires soon, I’d be more willing to pay around $37,000 for this car.  All things considered this RS4 is only priced about $5,000 above your ordinary B7 S4, and for that you get much more car, and one that few others have.

Your review seems spot on, Brian. This is a very special model, but most people don’t realize the significant differences from the more common S4. Now that prices have come down, the RS4 is a much easier choice.

The mismatched tires are concerning – not about having to replace them – but with regard to what it says about the care this car has received. Audi’s quattro system is sensitive to tire differences corner-to-corner (both tread pattern and depth). If you can afford a late model RS4, you can afford to replace all four tires with a matching set with even tread depth.

As with any car like this, even the best kept will cost you a lot in maintenance and repair over time. Questionable care by prior owners could significantly increase that cost.

One of the biggest advantages of the RS4 over other models were the revisions to the drive train and suspension to eliminate most of the typical Audi push. It’s something you’d never know until you drove the car – and then you can immediately feel the difference between this car and the S4. The motor is just icing on the cake, frankly!
