Looking through today’s BMW lineup, where everything has a million M badges to accompany the gazillion horsepower, I’ll be honest – little excites me. The M2 is pretty awesome, and a properly equipped 4-Series is a nice looker, but most I have trouble distinguishing from the Kia lineup. So it’s nice to head back in time a bit to something that’s both unique and understated at the same time. Of course, you’ll also want rear-drive only, and a singing naturally-aspirated inline-six.
Today’s Z4 has all of those things. In front is the N52 inline-six, here rated at 261 horsepower and 232 lb.ft of torque. For those counting, that’s a bit more horsepower and nearly the same torque as the S52 had only a few years earlier, and N52 has a lighter alloy block. They sound great, too. The E86 was rear-drive only, too. And rare? You better believe it. We’ve all grown accustom to the unique looks of the M Coupe and its resultant low production numbers. But the 3.0si barely sold better. Just over 2,100 were sold here in just two model years, a few hundred more than the M variant. You’re not likely to see them cruising down the road in your commute, in other words. And while the looks are polarizing, I think they’re rather pretty. The best part? They’re also pretty affordable.

So what we have here is a rare car in a great color combination. Montego Blue Metallic looks fantastic, and the New England beige leather covering the interior is a welcome departure from BMW’s insistence that black goes well with blues. Trim? Yeah, not an all-carbon-fiber affair here, there’s lovely wood and chrome trim accents. It’s also well equipped, with an M Sport suspension, sport seats, xenon headlights, cruise control, and and automatic climate control.
It’s not all great – it’s got an automatic transmission for those who hate that. But for a commuter with style? Yeah, it’s a pretty good choice in traffic. Condition is pretty good overall, though admittedly not perfect. But this still strikes me as a lot of car in the mid-teens – assuming you don’t mind looking at it. Maybe if you’re embarrassed to call it your BMW, slap some Toyota badges on it and call it day?

A Volvo SUV is a more attractively designed car. Let that sink in.
Love how the seller tries to frame the pictures so that the nasty wear on the driver’s outside bolsters isn’t obvious.
I know next to nothing of BMWs from this era, but this one looks rode hard and put away wet.
personal taste is a great indicator of preceptive intelligence… allowing for mass hysteria and some other diversions we are left with some interesting choices beyond the group think cookie cutter norm… this brings us to this beautiful coupe, one of a rare few BMWs to achieve sporting status…
all the noise about the M3 or the M5 doesn’t change the fact they are sedans not sports cars… this is a sports car and a damn good one… M Sport suspension, paddle shifting automatic transmission that properly used with left foot braking will allow quick driving, and a beautiful interior to enjoy…
there are adult education classes for the artistically challenged that may well cure the notion that a boxy small suv is an attractive alternative to an actual sports car… but i digress, please continue with your daily attempts at modern living indoors while remembering to wear a mask outdoors…
very nice car for the money
