One of the more surprising special edition Porsche dropped on us the was the 2008 Cayman S Design Edition 1 … edition. Porsche pitched it as homage to Porsche Design and the 35th anniversary of the Chronograph 1 watch designed by Ferdinand Porsche. Changes includes a triple racing stripe down the middle of the car and on both sides of the doors, Porsche’s Active Suspension Management, 19″ wheels sourced from the 997 Turbo, some special gauge cluster font, and Alcantara on the roof, handbrake lever, and steering wheel. There was no bump in power, but you do get a serialized plaque on the glove box door. Now as we sit some 14 years later, they are merely a blip on the radar in vast sea of watercooled Porsche products. But that won’t stop used dealers from hyping them up and try to charge a super premium on them. Such is life!

This car is #603 of #777 produced and shows an average 57,000 miles. That’s not low at all, but it’s also not super high. So why this car is priced at $50,000 makes no sense to me at all. These have been trading in the mid-30s for a long time now, and while I realize prices for enthusiasts cars have shot up some, a made-up special edition 987 is not on any hot list of collector cars for 2022. You can probably make you own assumptions about this dealer as they seem only to communicate with the Caps Lock key glued down, so maybe that has to do with the crazy price. So while a cool car, maybe look for one of the other 776 cars for a better deal. They sure are out there.

These special edition 997 Caymans are not all that special. Just some cosmetic changes, nothing more. The aftermarket turbo adds little to no value regardless of how much power it has; most buyers are looking for stock cars. Those that are looking for a modded Cayman are not spending $50k on a 60k mile 987.1 with an M97 IMS engine. The dealer goes on and on about how his prices are fair and no haggle pricing then has “Make Offer†button.

This is the usual Porsche “Put lipstick on that pig and get it out the door” model.
At the time this was released, the news was all about the facelift/new-engine/transmission/etc 997.2 model coming soon.. and I’d guess Porsche had some of these body shells still kicking around, so as usual, they made a “Special Model” to urge them out the door. I will say the orange ones are pretty cool-looking cars – nothing else special about them except when the wheels were painted to look like Fuchs 911 wheels. The issue is the problematic engine (even though it really isn’t awful – it has a “reputation” that makes the 987.2 a much more desirable car.)
Same deal – check out the 2006 955 Cayanne “Titanium Edition” cars… the 2009 Cayenne 957 was in production so the pig got makeup.
