The soft-window Targa is one of those cars that we rarely come across, but when we do they are always something to marvel at. Introduced in 1967, the soft-window Targa is basically a convertible with a fixed roll hoop, built primarily because Porsche felt uncertain about the sustained viability of convertibles on the market due to increasingly stringent crash regulations. The Targa we are all most familiar with, featuring a standard rear glass window was also made available beginning in 1968, leaving the soft-window targas as a bit of a short-lived anomaly. The example featured here is a great looking Irish Green 1967 Porsche 911 Soft-Window Targa, located in North Carolina. It was restored more than two decades ago and recently has received a full refresh to bring back its beauty.

Sometimes you don’t realize what you have until it’s gone. So goes the story for me and my love of Mercedes-Benzes from the 1980s and 1990s in comparison to the current model range. Mercedes still makes wonderfully good cars, but a bit of the mystique is gone, as an ever expanding SUV lineup emerges and the company tries to lure in those obsessed by the badge with the new CLA sedan. By 1994, the W124 E class was appearing a bit dated in comparison to the Japanese luxury upstarts Lexus, Acura and Infiniti. However, if I look at any of those models from the Far East in comparison to this E420 for sale in Connecticut, I’d say the E420 has stood the test of time. It might have not been the most exciting thing to look at when it was new, but the hallmark Mercedes build quality along with V8 muscle are ever apparent.

“German car enthusiasts, please stay behind the barriers until the horn has been sounded…
Yes, we realize that clean, moderately-miled E30s are few and far between these days, and yes, we realize that they were plentiful when you started searching and now all of sudden fanboys and LeMons racers have taken them all.
Ok, ok, ok… you may enter the BiddingDome. The reserve is on, but we are confident you will clear that first hurdle with aplomb. Soak in the low miles, and imagine yourself bathing in almost 25 years of records. Imagine the clean, leathery smell of the reupholstered seats, and feeling the balance of inline-6, manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive sedan under your butt.
Sure, the last one you saw this clean went for $8k, and it has a cracked dash, so maybe you can just be patient. But at that rate, it’ll appreciate, so you might as well just pull the trigger now. Not buying this car is losing you money…”
(just at 10% the rate it’s costing you money)
Hop on the E30 bidding train, folks. It’s an express route.

1 CommentFans of the Audi V8, rejoice! I know there are a few more than just me out there and we always love seeing a clean example of one of the best bits of Audi engineering in history. Sure, there are more significant Audi models, but the V8 certainly deserves to be amongst the top 5. Many view it as an overly complicated, underpowered car – and indeed, in 3.6 automatic form as it was originally received in the U.S., the V8 felt a bit flat. But let’s not forget that Audi reinvigorated what was already an aging chassis to make it feel remarkably fresh. They brought for the first time an automatic gearbox to all-wheel drive, opening an entirely new market share for Audi and making a real contender in the large executive market. But for motorsport fans, the real meat of the Audi V8 meal was the sporting potential of the manual models. It’s often overlooked, but the V8 was a remarkable performer, especially in manual 4.2 version. Today’s example doesn’t have that magical setup, but even in less powerful 3.6 form the car was plenty potent when tied to a 6-speed manual:

1 CommentThis is the time of year you’ll invariably be asked “where do you summer?†I’m more interested in “what do you summer in?†This 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SE Cabriolet appears to be a perfect vehicle in which to holiday. This car was given a respray a few years ago along with an interior retrim, including the extensive amount of wood trim present in these models.
