This is a car I may have never seen on the road. At least in recent years since it’s entirely possible I saw one while they were in production. Here we have a Grand Prix White 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Targa located in Pennsylvania. The Targa in general is a less common sight these days, a point we may see change with Porsche reintroducing the proper Targa design for the 991, but the 964 Targa seems even less common than the rest. Part of that is simple numbers. The 964 was only around for 5 years and there were much fewer Targas produced than their Coupe and Cabriolet counterparts. Anyway, these are the sorts of things that tend to draw my attention with any auction as I’ve always had a fascination with the Targa even if I’m not sure whether I’d want to own one. This particular car is very low mileage, though please check the ad for details as it is somewhat unconfirmed.

Oh, the 1980s. Full of crazy creations, custom calamities and questionable creativity. If you wanted a crazy tuner car back then, there were plenty of options from mild to wild; some of them we’ve covered, such as the DP slantnose cars and the Koenig widebody 560SEC Mercedes-Benz. But if one company has consistently gone above and beyond, it would have to be Rinspeed. Afterall, they did made a 911 turbo truck that changed color and roofline and was encrusted in jewels. That takes a really special mind – one that most would argue should probably be in a straight jacket. Nevertheless, there’s always a market for the crazy Rinspeed creations, and one of their less extreme models has come up for sale. Based upon a 911 but borrowing water-cooled bits for a unique look, check out the Rinspeed R69:

4 CommentsI was so certain that we I had written this car up before as the Racing Dynamics prototype, I initially wrote the headline up as a “revisit”. But the year was wrong, the wheels were different, and then I noticed something – that earlier car was an R48, and this car took it to the next level. A full bored and stroked 4.93 liters, the RD50 pushed the performance envelope past the M5. With discrete body modifications and some of the best looking aftermarket wheels ever fitted to a BMW, this is certainly a unique alternative to the normal E39:

Comments closedThere’s always talk about classic cars suddenly getting out of reach for us mere mortals, but dig down a bit into a manufacturer’s portfolio and there are still a few cars out there to be had on a shoestring budget without requiring massive amounts of expensive restoration work or mechanical fixes. Case in point the Mercedes-Benz W114 Coupe. There’s been a lot of discussion on the Benz forums as to why these particular Mercedes are cheap, especially since they were the first all-new chassis to appear post World War II. Perhaps the appearance was a bit staid and levels of luxury were down a bit in comparison to the contemporary S class. Maybe it was the carbonation problems that some owners of petrol engined examples experienced. Finding a good classic Mercedes that is in good running shape is not easy when your budget is under $10,000 these days, especially when it comes to a coupe. This 280C for sale in Georgia, though, fits the profile.

Comments closedThe “Batmobile” is a legendary car that helped to both define BMW’s place in global motorsports and to solidy its presence in the sports sedan realm. Sure, they had competed successfully for years in touring car and sports car races, not to mention substantial involvement in motorcycle racing. But the bread and butter of BMW’s 1980s reputation was built on their sporting nature, and that legacy was born in the 1970s touring cars. The CSL was a message to the world, much like the Porsche 911RS was – BMW was a major player, and here to stay. They’ve since built upon that racing legend, but enthusiasts look back upon these models as the ones that spawned the dreams of countless children – the lucky ones of which would go on to buy new BMWs in the 1980s. It’s not often that you see a well presented CSL with racing pedigree come up for sale, but there’s a stunning example available today:
