1988 BMW M6

$_57 (5)

As the E28 M5 continues to make lists for hidden gems and affordable future classics, the E24 M6 sits in the corner with the same running gear, a sportier shape, and a scowl because no one pays any attention to it. It’s like the girls at the middle school dance all chose the tough guys who dressed up in suits, while the slick blonde preppy in the cable-knit sweater gets no love. While they may not be proclaimed the next great ///M investment, they still represent a great performance bargain. This M6 scores two out of three on the interior/exterior/engine bay test, looking great in red and presenting a sumptuous tan leather interior with just a single bolster detraction. The downside is the engine bay, which is pretty filthy. A pressure washer and some long-handled toothbrushes might be able to help that out, and hopefully the low 107k miles means in the inside of the engine looks a heck of a lot better than the outside.

1995 Volkswagen Passat GLX/TDi Variant

Yesterday, the blog Daily Turismo wrote up a 2003 Volkswagen Passat W8 Variant 6-speed, the very car I wrote up about 10 months ago here. In looking back at my original article, I suggested that at under $8,000 I’d be interested, but that part of that interest was going to be setting aside enough money to do a TDI motor swap when the inevitable problems popped up with the W8 mill. I find the idea of a performance oriented chassis with a fuel-sipping TDi swap intriguing; the exterior of the W8 just looks that little bit better than the normal Passat with a few small details that make a big difference, but the complexity and inability to use the power of the engine means day-to-day, and for the long run, the TDi would probably be a better engine choice for me. I’m not alone in thinking this, apparently – though the VR6 isn’t known as being as finicky as the W8, here’s a 1995 Passat GLX VR6 Variant that’s undergone the swap I propose:

10K Friday Sonder Edition: 280s v. 300SEL v. 560SEC v. S420 v. S600 Coupe v. S430 v. CL500

It’s pretty amazing when generations of cars come together in value; right now, there are 4 generations of Mercedes-Benz S-class models that all seem to hit market for around the same amount. From the beginnings of the “Sonder” Class Mercedes with the W116 through the W220 cars that are only just over a generation old, there’s a tremendous amount of luxury available in these super sedans and coupes. So what would be your choice? We’ll go by age this time, starting with the W116:

1976 Mercedes-Benz 450SLC with 54k miles

While the R107 Mercedes-Benz is fast becoming the quintessential classic Mercedes-Benz, it’s hardtop sibling, the C107 SLC coupe has been relegated to a bit of obscurity in the annals of automotive history. It was a curious offering, a large Mercedes coupe based off the smaller SL roadster. I always wondered what would have became of the SLC if Mercedes developed it fully to the end of the R107 run, but with the introduction of the SEC coupe in 1982, it was not to be. This 1976 450SLC is a one family owned car and smack dab in the middle of the production run. With just over 54,000 miles on the clock, this is one to watch.

Feature Listing: 1972 Porsche 911T

There are always certain colors that elicit an irrational excitement from me when I come across them on a 911. The most popular, of course, being Guards Red, but some of the others are even better. Riviera Blue. Viper Green. Speed Yellow. These colors certainly aren’t for everyone because of their vibrant assertiveness, but for some of us they always hold a special place. For my tastes, the best shades on any sports car are orange and those are the cars that really get my heart moving. So, obviously how could I pass up this beautiful Tangerine 1972 Porsche 911T for sale from our friends at Sun Valley Auto Club in Hailey, Idaho? And, of course, with 1972 being the only year these early 911s featured an external oil tank filler, that adds an extra bit of rarity to this already rare low mileage 911T.
