2001 BMW M5

The E39 M5 is well known for being one of the wolfiest cars wearing sheeps’ clothing ever. Typically seen in silver or black, I grew up near an Imola Red version that draws a bit more attention. Today’s will draw the gaze of all who pass, including car lovers and cops. As much I love subdued performance machines, red is my favorite color and I actually love this hue on M5s. I might go without the bright chrome wheels, but hey, if you’re going to be blinding people, you might as well get some help from your wheels as well. With right around 100k miles and a Buy-It-Now of $16k, this is a great deal for a stunner in both aesthetics and performance.

Motorsports Monday: 1984 Volkswagen GTi 1.8T

While last week’s Corrado SLC track car sure checked the right boxes for me, for some it was not extreme enough to be considered a “race car”. Fair enough, it was a track car at heart for high performance driver’s eduction or perhaps some solo/time trial events, but it was mostly just a stripped Corrado. Well, for the Volkswagen faithful today I have a much more extreme example – a GTi ready to tackle just about anything you’re ready to toss at it. Stripped down, beefed up and widened, this GTi sure looks the racer part – check out that cage! But to make it go like it promises outside, the heart has been replaced by a turned up 1.8T motor. Having been in a similar package on track, you’re mind can’t fathom what a light car like this with that much power will do compared to the original:

Ministerial Transport: 1997 Mercedes-Benz S420 & 1995 Mercedes-Benz S320

As much as world leaders bang on about climate change and conservation, what is it that we typically see in the car park at the G7 Summit? Big black sedans. With security for heads of state of utmost importance, it’s easier to pack in a bunch of armor and defense systems into a car like the Audi A8 of German Chancellor Angela Merkel than it is a Toyota Prius. The consummate state limousine for many nations has always been one car: the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The 1990s saw the chains move for this perennial favorite, growing larger in almost every dimension with a new V12 engine on offer and a myriad of electronically assisted accessories. The following two black W140 sedans represent the lower end of what was on offer in the US market, each with low mileage. We’ll start with this 1997 S420 for sale in Texas.

1987 Porsche 911 Turbo

I really enjoy seeing some of the closer, detail, shots of the 930. The car is instantly recognizable as a 911 and the details then provide us those subtle clues that hint at this being something more than a standard 911. The wider rear arches stretching over the rear wheels. Those distinctive lines of the spoiler that guide air into the intercooler and help differentiate this from the basic whale tail. Just the general slightly muscled and aggressive overall look, which lets everyone know that this is a car that requires respect from its driver but that it also remains a usable and streetable machine. The car we have here is a one-owner Guards Red 1987 Porsche 911 Turbo, located in Miami, with only 34,000 miles on it. The seller does not appear to possess much background or documentation of the car’s history, but from what we can see the care the car has received was considerable.

Motorsports Monday: 2005 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup

The fall from grace of the 996 has resulted in some stunning deals on pretty incredible cars. They’re not without their problems; the 996 isn’t the most attractive Porsche produced and there are known engine issues to combat. But if you’re looking for an inexpensive track weapon with and impressive amount of speed, it’s pretty hard to best the 996 package. While you can get a very nice example of a GT3 – Porsche’s then pinnacle of dual-purpose street and track package – for around $50,000 and drive it to the track, if you’re willing to spend just a bit more you can look at leaping into another level of performance with the “Cup” car. Stripped down and stiffened up, these factory racers are simply stunning with their speed and were cutting edge less than a decade ago, yet today you can find an excellent example like this 2005 model for less than $80,000 – only a third of what a new one would cost you.
