2015 BMW M235i Convertible

Recently I looked at both the M2 and it’s badder, madder brother the M2 CS. They’re both giant killers of cars, following the age-old recipe of ‘stick a big motor in a small chassis’. Well, there’s a third option BMW offered with that formula. It’s a bit less wild than the other two, but it also has a lot of stuff going for it.

The M235i effectively picked up the reigns from the outgoing 135i. BMW stretched the wheelbase an inch and overall length 3 inches, gave it 4-Series styling up front and a revised rear end, and a refreshed interior – but underneath, the important bits remained effectively the same. You got a 320 horsepower N55 turbocharged inline-six that could be mated with a six-speed manual, big brakes, and M Sport suspension. True, like the 135i it wasn’t a full M model, but it’s still a lot of the experience of one. And unlike the M2, you could get more color inside! And, you could get a convertible! On top of all that, you can grab one for relatively short money today:

Well, the dealer manages to tell you not very much about this car. It’s Glacier Silver Metallic over Coral Red leather, and having spent plenty of time in my similar 135i – it’s a lovely combo. It’s an interesting spec; it appears to have the Premium Package with auto-dim mirrors and Comfort Access, but does not have the Cold Weather or Driver Assistance packages; so no heated seats or parking sensors. Still, the M235i is pretty loaded; navigation, Harman Kardon sound, xenon headlights, adaptive M suspension, M brakes and M aerodynamic body pieces. If you went back just a few years, this would be really top-spec for an M3.

Today? You can grab a really nice condition M235i in the mid 20s. This isn’t the only one, as there are plenty more coupes available as well. Right now they’re trading around 2/3rds of the price of an early M2. You get most of the performance in a slightly less aggressive package, and honestly I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Granted, the M235i is a lot more slab-sided and it lost some of the curvature of the 135i that made it look very street-fighterish. But it’s still a lot of car for the money.
